About The Position

The Consumer Lending Manager is responsible for leading and managing the underwriting team for both direct and indirect consumer loan products at the credit union. This role ensures consistent, high-quality underwriting decisions, oversees indirect loan operations, and drives performance through coaching and development. The manager implements effective production and quality measurement systems, collaborates with branch leadership and other departments, and supports strategic initiatives with professionalism and adaptability.

Requirements

  • Expert knowledge of the credit union's products and services.
  • Expert knowledge of organization's policies/procedures and credit union's service philosophy.
  • Working knowledge of safety and security program for false alarms, robberies, bomb threats and extortion.
  • Working knowledge of credit union's in-house computer system.
  • Expert knowledge of state and federal consumer lending regulations.
  • Expert knowledge of consumer lending products, underwriting principles, and regulatory requirements.
  • Expert level knowledge of staff development, goal writing and project management functionality.
  • A sighted person to effectively review documents.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with staff, members and vendors.
  • Ability to perform necessary computer-related input.
  • Limited mobility required.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain confidential records and reports.

  • Five to eight years of experience in Consumer Lending, Management, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience in a supervisory or management role in lending is strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop high-performing teams.
  • Experience with performance measurement tools and data-driven decision-making.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and a positive leadership presence.
  • Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of consumer loan underwriters and processors to ensure high performance and adherence to lending standards.
  • Manage underwriting operations for both direct and indirect consumer loans, ensuring timely and accurate decision-making.
  • Oversee indirect lending operations, including account openings, loan document review, loan setup, and funding processes.
  • Design and implement performance metrics to measure individual, product, and channel-level loan production and decision quality.
  • Collaborate with the design of workflows, product features, system uses, and automated underwriting criteria.
  • Ensure current underwriting guidelines are updated to the current credit union standards and followed with consistency.
  • Collaborate with branch managers and other departments to ensure alignment and support of lending strategies and member service goals.
  • Underwrite complex and high-level consumer loan applications as needed, serving as a subject matter expert.
  • Monitor and manage workflow, productivity, and quality control across the underwriting and indirect lending teams.
  • Manage and disseminate organizational and departmental changes as directed by lending leadership and in alignment with credit union strategic goals.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives and support the implementation of process, procedural and organizational changes.
  • Maintain a professional, positive team environment that promotes accountability, growth, and service excellence.
  • Ensure Indirect Dealerships are properly vetted, documentation obtained and monitored for overall performance and program participation.
  • Support the VP of Consumer Lending in executing strategic initiatives and departmental goals.
  • Develop, administer and monitor goals for department production and each team member.
  • Support goal review and development through monthly one on ones, side by side coaching and regular meetings.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects and initiatives to enhance lending operations.
  • Assist in the development and revision of underwriting and indirect lending policies and procedures.
  • Provide training and mentorship to new and existing team members.
  • Represent the lending department in internal meetings and planning sessions.
  • Stay current on industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices in consumer lending and indirect loan operations.
  • Research and recognize trends in the financial industry and their relevance to the credit unions’ strategic initiatives
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
