Consultant, Data Engineer - Reference Data Management

Nationwide•Columbus, OH
•$118,000 - $178,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Nationwide Financial is hiring an individual-contributor Data Engineer to help establish and operate a governed reference data capability, initially for product and fund data and potentially additional data domains. The role is embedded in the business organization and focuses on configuring, integrating, and operating the Semarchy reference data management platform. The engineer translates business decisions and requirements into platform models, workflows, data loads, integrations, and maintained views and APIs, ensuring data is reliable, secure, and accessible. The role partners with business data owners and stewards, who determine data definitions, authoritative sources, and business decisions about data correctness. The engineer implements and supports the technical solution based on those decisions, including business rules and access controls, and helps address data changes and issues. A key consumption path is delivery of approved data to Snowflake, alongside other required integrations. The broader Data Engineer responsibilities include acquiring, curating, and publishing ready-to-use data for analytical and operational uses, supporting both batch and streaming processes. The position participates in the full software delivery lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and production maintenance. Work is hybrid, with an expectation of two office days per week. The intended locations are Columbus, Ohio, or Scottsdale, Arizona; some remote internal candidates with critical industry skills and relevant experience may be considered. This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization, and Nationwide does not participate in the STEM OPT extension program.

Requirements

  • Six to ten years of relevant experience with data quality rules and data management organization, standards, and practices.
  • Solid experience with software development on large and/or concurrent projects.
  • Experience in data warehousing, statistical analysis, data models, and queries.
  • Advanced skills with modern programming and scripting languages such as SQL, R, Python, Spark, UNIX Shell scripting, Perl, or Ruby.
  • Strong problem-solving, verbal communication, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to influence, build relationships, negotiate, and present to senior leaders.
  • Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, business, statistics, math, a related field, or comparable experience and education are strongly preferred.
  • One to three years’ experience developing compelling stories and distinctive visualizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate studies in business, statistics, math, computer science, or a related field.
  • Insurance or financial services industry knowledge.
  • Direct experience with the Semarchy reference data management platform.
  • Certifications are encouraged but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with business data owners and stewards to understand reference data needs and translate their decisions into Semarchy models, including entities, attributes, relationships, and hierarchies.
  • Configure validation and match/merge rules, authoring workflows, and approval workflows to support agreed business rules and stewardship practices.
  • Recommend practical roles and access patterns for users who create, review, and approve data, and support adoption by new domains and users.
  • Build and operate data loads and integrations that bring product and fund data from source systems into Semarchy and deliver approved data to Snowflake and other required destinations.
  • Maintain views and APIs that provide governed data access without coupling consumers to Semarchy’s internal tables.
  • Monitor pipelines, investigate failures, reconcile records across sources and destinations, and implement checks for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
  • Break requirements into technical work, estimate delivery, and apply secure engineering practices while building and maintaining data flows and integrations.
  • Work with data owners and stewards to document definitions and identify critical data elements.
  • Support data quality profiling, lineage, metadata, and documentation so users can understand data origins, meaning, and appropriate use.
  • Embed governance standards in Semarchy workflows and quality checks, and partner with governance teams to address data issues and support adoption.
  • Analyze end-to-end data product requirements and existing business processes to lead data product design, development, and implementation.
  • Produce data building blocks, data models, and data flows for dimensional data, reporting, feeds, dashboards, and data science research and exploration.
  • Translate business data stories into technical work breakdowns and estimates for schedule or sprint planning.
  • Apply secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle.
  • Create business-user access methods to structured and unstructured data, including mapping to common data models, transformations, validation, and other data processing techniques.
  • Build data cleansing, imputation, standardization, extraction, ingestion, and curation routines using source-system understanding, data profiling, and source-data change monitoring.
  • Facilitate medium- to large-scale data engineering using cloud technologies such as Azure and AWS and related big data technologies.
  • Collaborate with enterprise DevSecOps and internal teams on CI/CD practices and tools such as JIRA, Jenkins, and Confluence.
  • Implement production monitoring processes and systems to maintain data quality, accuracy, and availability.
  • Develop and maintain scalable streaming and batch pipelines and API integrations for increasing data volume and complexity.
  • Write and perform data unit and integration tests; create and execute test data and scripts; and develop automated testing programs and reusable test data.
  • Practice code management and integration using Git principles and repositories.
  • Participate as an expert, leader, and learner in data analysis, architecture, application design, coding, and testing practices.
  • Lead design decisions for complex data pipelines, integration patterns, and reusable engineering components within a product, platform, or domain.
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
