About The Position

Nationwide Financial is hiring a Consultant, Data Engineer to help develop and operate a governed reference data capability, initially focused on product and fund data. This hands-on technical role is embedded in the business organization and centers on configuring, integrating, and operating the Semarchy reference data management platform. The engineer translates business requirements and data-owner decisions into platform models, workflows, data loads, integrations, and maintained views and APIs. Business owners and stewards retain responsibility for data meaning, authoritative sources, and business decisions; the engineer implements and supports the technical capability, including agreed rules and access controls. The role works with business data owners and stewards to establish trusted definitions, stewardship practices, and reliable ways to share data across systems. Responsibilities include building data flows between source systems, Semarchy, Snowflake, and other required destinations; maintaining governed access methods; monitoring pipelines and resolving quality or reconciliation issues; and supporting governance through profiling, lineage, metadata, and documentation. The position also contributes to extending Nationwide’s enterprise data strategy and reference data capability to additional domains. The broader Data Engineer role involves acquiring, curating, and publishing data for analytical and operational use, with a focus on ready-to-use data that creates a consistent source of truth. It encompasses the software engineering lifecycle, including requirements, design, development, testing, deployment, and production maintenance, across batch and real-time processes and a range of data technologies. The role has a hybrid work expectation of two days per week in the office. Nationwide intends to fill the position in Columbus, Ohio, or Scottsdale, Arizona. Applications from internal remote employees with critical industry skills and relevant experience may occasionally be considered. This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization, and Nationwide does not participate in the STEM OPT extension program.

  • Experience in data warehousing, statistical analysis, data models, and queries.
  • Advanced skills with modern programming and scripting languages such as SQL, R, Python, Spark, UNIX Shell scripting, Perl, or Ruby.
  • Strong problem-solving, verbal communication, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to influence, build relationships, negotiate, and present to senior leaders.
  • Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, business, statistics, math, a related field, or comparable experience and education are strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement, with an expectation of two days per week in the office.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with business data owners and stewards to understand reference data needs and translate decisions into Semarchy models, including entities, attributes, relationships, and hierarchies.
  • Configure validation, matching and merging rules, and authoring and approval workflows in accordance with agreed business rules and stewardship practices.
  • Recommend role and access patterns for users who create, review, and approve data, and support adoption by new domains and users.
  • Build and operate data loads and integrations that bring product and fund reference data from source systems into Semarchy and deliver approved data to Snowflake and other required destinations.
  • Maintain views and APIs that provide governed access to data without coupling consumers to Semarchy’s internal tables.
  • Monitor pipelines, investigate failures, reconcile records across sources and destinations, and implement checks for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
  • Break requirements into technical work, estimate delivery, and apply secure engineering practices as data flows and integrations are built and maintained.
  • Document data definitions and help identify critical data elements with business owners and stewards.
  • Support data quality profiling, lineage, metadata, and documentation so users can understand data provenance, meaning, and appropriate use.
  • Embed governance standards in Semarchy workflows and quality checks, and partner with governance teams to address data issues and support adoption.
  • Analyze data product requirements and business processes to lead the design, development, and implementation of data products.
  • Produce data building blocks, models, and flows for dimensional data, reporting, feeds, dashboards, and data science research and exploration.
  • Translate business data stories into technical work breakdowns and estimates.
  • Create business-user access methods for structured and unstructured data, applying data mapping, transformation, validation, and other relevant techniques.
  • Build data cleansing, imputation, standardization, profiling, change-monitoring, extraction, ingestion, and curation routines.
  • Collaborate with DevSecOps and internal teams on CI/CD practices and tools.
  • Implement production monitoring processes to ensure data quality, accuracy, and availability.
  • Develop and maintain scalable streaming and batch pipelines and API integrations.
  • Write and perform data unit and integration tests; create test data and scripts to validate quality and completeness; and develop reusable automated tests.
  • Practice code management and integration using engineering Git principles and repositories.
  • Participate in data analysis, architecture, application design, coding, and testing, and lead design decisions for complex pipelines, integration patterns, and reusable engineering components.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
