About The Position

Electric Boat is overseeing construction of the Integrated Propulsion System (IPS) Motor Module for future COLUMBIA Class Submarines at a vendor site in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and execution of IPS component test programs at the Compatibility Test Facility (CTF) in Philadelphia. D489 CLB Propulsion Engineering is seeking an experienced engineer to support construction of Motor Modules and, as needed, production and pre-production IPS component test programs in the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

The selected candidate will provide design and deck plate support for main propulsion system (MPS) equipment, including main propulsion controls and ACC subcomponents, main propulsion motor drives, and main propulsion switchboards. The role also provides deck plate support for MPS pre-production equipment and components during follow-on Motor Module Test Programs (MMTPs) and inter-module test programs. The engineer will collaborate with IPS cognizant component groups to troubleshoot complex issues and support construction and testing activities.

This is a permanent, onsite position in Philadelphia, reporting to the Philadelphia Navy Yard, approximately four miles from Center City. Before permanently transferring to Philadelphia, the selected candidate is expected to complete a three-to-six-month training rotation in New London, Connecticut, with the respective component group(s). Internal transfers from New London, Groton, or Quonset Point will be offered a relocation package that includes a moving package and a 15% site differential bonus applied to base salary upon completion of the training rotation. The role primarily works first shift, but may support 16/5 up to 24/7 construction and testing as required. Second- and third-shift differentials apply when assigned, and additional hours worked receive straight-time compensation in accordance with policy.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or a related technical field, such as Electrical, Systems, Mechanical, Marine, Mechatronics, Physics, or Mathematics.
• 5–14 years of post-graduate engineering experience.
• Experience using Microsoft products.
• Experience working in a high-stress, high-tempo environment.
• Experience working long hours.
• Ability to work independently and adhere to strict work control requirements.
• Positive attitude and strong ability to work well with others.

Nice To Haves

• Master of Science or Engineering degree with a technical background, such as Electrical, Systems, Mechanical, Marine, Mechatronics, Physics, or Mathematics.
• 1–14 years of COLUMBIA or VA engineering experience involving ship-component or similar-program design, including preparation, review, and approval of technical work documents or test procedures.
• Knowledge of COLUMBIA IPS component and system designs and CTF requirements and capabilities.
• Prior experience supporting COLUMBIA IPS component work involving Main Propulsion Drives (MPDs), Main Propulsion Controllers (MPCs), Main Propulsion Switchboards (MP SWBDs), or ACCs.
• Experience working with NAVSEA or NNL.
• Multidisciplinary systems engineering experience with complex systems-based products.
• Experience with MIL Standards.
• Experience in control systems, power electronics, variable-speed motor drives, software configuration management, fluid systems engineering, or thermal analysis.
• Experience supporting deck plate work evolutions and interfacing with Operations and Test.

Responsibilities

• Provide design and deck plate support for main propulsion system equipment during follow-on Motor Module construction.
• Provide deck plate support for MPS pre-production equipment and components during follow-on Motor Module and inter-module test programs, as needed.
• Collaborate with IPS cognizant component groups to troubleshoot more complicated issues.
• Determine the root cause of IPS cognizant issues and correct deficiencies promptly to minimize interruptions to construction.
• Perform surveillances of work being performed within the area of cognizance.
• Act as a primary Electric Boat contact for on-site IPS component suppliers.
• Support development of IPS cognizant component group engineering directions.
• Support other locations with issue resolution for COLUMBIA-specific equipment.
• Support construction activities and shipboard integration at Electric Boat manufacturing facilities.
• Gather information to support improvements to COLUMBIA IPS designs and documentation.
• Interface with technical and management personnel at NAVSEA, NNL, NSWC, and vendors.
• Support IPS test programs as applicable.
• Mentor entry-level engineers.
• Work as a component shift lead.
• Advise management in the Specialist role.
