About The Position

Electric Boat is seeking experienced candidates to support the construction of Integrated Propulsion System (IPS) Motor Modules for future COLUMBIA Class Submarines at a vendor site in Philadelphia, PA. The role also involves supporting test programs for IPS components at the Compatibility Test Facility (CTF) in Philadelphia, PA. The selected candidate will provide design and deck plate support for main propulsion system (MPS) equipment, including controls, motor drives, and switchboards, during construction and testing phases. This is a permanent, onsite position in Philadelphia, with an initial 3-6 month training rotation in New London, CT. The role requires collaboration with various engineering groups, troubleshooting complex issues, performing work surveillances, acting as a liaison with suppliers, and supporting engineering direction development. The position may require support for 16/5 up to 24/7 construction and testing as needed, with potential for shift differentials. The primary shift will be 1st shift. The role also includes mentoring entry-level engineers, acting as a component shift lead, and advising management as a specialist.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in engineering or related technical field is required (e.g. Electrical, Systems, Mechanical, Marine, Mechatronics, Physics, Mathematics, etc.)
• 5 – 14 years of post-graduate engineering experience is required
• Experience using Microsoft products
• Experience working in a high stress, high tempo environment
• Experience working long hours
• Able to work independently and adhere to strict work control requirements
• Positive attitude and strong ability to work well with others

Nice To Haves

• Masters of Science or Engineering degree with technical background (e.g. Electrical, Systems, Mechanical, Marine, Mechatronics, Physics, Mathematics, etc.) is preferred
• 1 - 14 year(s) of COLUMBIA or VA engineering experience (design of a ship component or similar program, including the preparation, review and approval of technical work documents, or test procedures) is preferred
• Knowledge of the COLUMBIA IPS component and system designs as well as the CTF requirements and capabilities is preferred
• Prior experience supporting COLUMBIA IPS component work of either Main Propulsion Drives (MPDs), Main Propulsion Controllers (MPCs), Main Propulsion Switchboards (MP SWBDs) or ACCs is preferred
• Experience working with NAVSEA/NNL
• Multi-disciplinary systems engineering experience in complex systems based products
• Experience with MIL Standards
• Experience in control systems, power electronics, variable speed motor drives, software configuration management, fluid systems engineering, or thermal analysis
• Experience supporting deck plate work evolutions and interfacing with Operations and Test

Responsibilities

• Provide design and deck plate support for main propulsion system (MPS) equipment (e.g., main propulsion controls and ACC subcomponent, main propulsion motor drives, and main propulsion switchboards) during follow-on motor module construction.
• Provide deck plate support of MPS pre-production equipment and MPS components during follow-on motor module test programs (MMTPs) and inter module test programs on an as needed basis.
• Collaborate with IPS cognizant component groups to troubleshoot more complicated issues as they arise.
• Determine the root cause of any IPS cognizant issues encountered and expeditiously correct any deficiencies to minimize interruptions to construction.
• Perform surveillances of work being performed under area of cognizance.
• Act as a primary Electric Boat contact for on-site IPS component suppliers.
• Support development of IPS cognizant component group engineering directions.
• Support other locations with issue resolution of COLUMBIA specific equipment.
• Support construction activities and shipboard integration at Electric Boat manufacturing facilities.
• Gather data / information to support development of COLUMBIA IPS design and documentation improvements.
• Interface with technical and management personnel at NAVSEA, NNL, NSWC, and vendors.
• Support IPS test programs as applicable.
• Mentor to entry level engineers.
• Work as a component shift lead.
• Advisor to management (Specialist).
