About The Position

S&ME is seeking an eager and dedicated part-time Construction Materials (CMT) Laboratory Technician to join our Construction Services team in Lexington, Kentucky. This entry-level role is essential in examining and evaluating materials like soil, concrete, masonry, and asphalt. You will collaborate with seasoned technicians and experts to ensure precise and comprehensive documentation of test outcomes, maintain laboratory instruments, and assist with equipment calibrations. Your contribution will be crucial to the success of our projects by verifying that materials comply with the required standards. S&ME has a history of delivering innovative geotechnical, civil, environmental, and construction material testing for over 50 years and has grown into a trusted partner for clients across various industries.

Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED
  • Curiosity and the willingness to learn; obtaining certifications is part of your growth
  • Commitment to at least 12 hours per week, understanding that hours may vary based on workload, including occasional weeks with reduced or no scheduled work.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills in English, including speaking, reading, and writing
  • Basic math skills with an understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure
  • A valid U.S. driver's license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) valid for driving in the United States, with an acceptable driving record
  • Willingness to safely operate a company-assigned vehicle, including trucks and SUVs.
  • Willingness to complete a background check, driving record check, and drug screen upon offer of employment.
  • Valid employment eligibility (I-9)

  • Active industry-related certifications, such as: American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
  • Active industry-related certifications, such as: International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
  • Active industry-related certifications, such as: DOT Certifications in the fields of Aggregate, Conventional Density, Asphalt, and Concrete

Responsibilities

  • Perform and record tests on various construction materials with accuracy and meticulousness.
  • Operate independently, ensuring that test results are logical, thorough, and prepared for review.
  • Keep all laboratory equipment in excellent condition and ensure it is properly calibrated.
  • Maintain the lab's efficiency and the accuracy of our testing procedures.
