About The Position

S&ME is seeking an eager and dedicated full-time Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Laboratory Technician to join our Construction Services team in New Albany, Indiana. As an entry-level technician, you will be essential in examining and evaluating materials like soil, concrete, masonry, and asphalt. You will collaborate with seasoned technicians and experts to ensure precise and comprehensive documentation of test outcomes, maintain laboratory instruments, and assist with equipment calibrations. Your contribution will be crucial to the success of our projects by verifying that materials comply with the required standards. This role involves performing and recording tests on various construction materials with accuracy and meticulousness, operating independently to ensure test results are logical, thorough, and prepared for review. You will also be responsible for keeping all laboratory equipment in excellent condition and ensuring it is properly calibrated, which is key to maintaining the lab's efficiency and the accuracy of our testing procedures. The role requires shifting work hours weekly based on project needs and weather conditions, including early mornings, some weekends, and overtime (paid at time and a half).

Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED
  • Curiosity and the willingness to learn; obtaining certifications is part of your growth
  • Strong attention to detail and effective communication skills in English, including speaking, reading, and writing
  • Basic math skills with an understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure
  • Understanding a fluctuating weekly work schedule depending on project needs
  • Valid U.S. driver's license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) valid for driving in the United States, with an acceptable driving record
  • Willingness to complete a background check, driving record check, and drug screen upon offer of employment
  • Willing and able to perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment
  • Willing and able to work most of the time in the office, but might be requested to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Willing and able to stand for potentially up to 12 hours a day
  • Willing and able to lift and carry 40-50 lbs. of field/laboratory samples and equipment
  • Willing and able to safely handle field tools and maneuver equipment on active construction sites
  • Valid employment eligibility (I-9)

  • Active industry-related certifications, a plus:
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
  • International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
  • DOT Certifications in the fields of Aggregate, Conventional Density, Asphalt, and Concrete
