About The Position

This position helps prepare the way for salvation and exaltation by providing essential gospel teachings, resources, and services to God's children. In addition to performing journeyman-level carpentry work, this role serves as a working lead, actively participating in daily field activities while providing direction, coordination, and oversight to the team. The Working Lead plans, assigns, and monitors work, ensures quality craftsmanship, promotes safe work practices, and mentors employees through hands-on training and support. This position supports Historic Sites by providing preventive and corrective maintenance, restoration, repair, and construction services that preserve and enhance historic properties while projecting an image of dignity, integrity, and respectability in accordance with established standards of quality, cost, and timeliness.

Requirements

• Demonstrated ability to lead by example, coordinate daily work activities, and effectively develop and mentor employees in a hands-on work environment.
• Journeyman-level carpentry experience with a minimum of four years of professional field experience required.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Ability to plan work, prioritize tasks, allocate resources, and maintain productivity while actively performing trade work alongside team members.
• Must pass all required safety, equipment, and job-specific certifications and training.
• Basic computer skills required for work order management, scheduling, documentation, communication, and reporting.
• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret plans, drawings, specifications, work orders, and written instructions.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions in the field.
• Must possess good vision for precision work, strong eye-hand coordination, and controlled hand movement.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, including understanding safety requirements, training materials, and operational instructions.
• Must be able to ask questions, provide direction, and communicate clearly with employees, contractors, vendors, and management.
• Must be able to safely work from ladders, scaffolds, mechanical lifts, roofs, and other elevated work locations for extended periods.
• Ability to distinguish colors when performing construction, maintenance, and restoration tasks.
• Must be able to independently lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and assist with team lifting and positioning of materials and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
• Must be able to stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, squat, reach, push, pull, and perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
• Must have at least 20/40 vision, with or without corrective lenses, and a minimum combined horizontal peripheral vision of 120 degrees.
• Commitment to quality craftsmanship, workplace safety, customer service, and preservation of Church historic properties.

Nice To Haves

• Multi-trade maintenance, construction, or restoration experience preferred.
• May be required to obtain and maintain DOT certification.

Responsibilities

• Works alongside team members in the field, providing hands-on leadership, instruction, and support while performing journeyman-level carpentry work.
• Coordinates daily work activities, assigns tasks, and adjusts priorities as needed to meet operational and project goals.
• Leads by example in workmanship, productivity, professionalism, and adherence to safety standards.
• Provides on-the-job training, coaching, and mentoring to develop employee skills and improve team performance.
• Monitors work progress and quality, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to established standards.
• Assists in planning and scheduling preventive maintenance, repair, restoration, and construction activities.
• Creates and manages work schedules, assigns work orders, and coordinates manpower and resources.
• Helps identify performance concerns and works with employees to improve skills, productivity, and accountability.
• Assists with implementing training programs and individual development plans.
• Estimates labor, materials, equipment, and time requirements for assigned projects.
• Purchases materials and coordinates deliveries to support project schedules.
• Works directly with vendors, contractors, and suppliers to obtain materials, services, and technical support as needed.
• Oversees assigned projects, including scoping, bidding, coordination, and completion.
• Conducts follow-up inspections to ensure quality and completeness of finished work.
• Assists management in interviewing, hiring, and onboarding employees.
• Ensures all work is performed in compliance with applicable safety regulations and Church standards.
• Uses, maintains, and repairs hand tools, power tools, portable machinery, and shop equipment.
• Performs all phases of carpentry, restoration, repair, and construction work using materials such as wood, metal, drywall, concrete, masonry, flooring products, laminates, and finish materials.
• Performs specialized work in cabinetry, hardscape and flooring, furnishings installation, and historic restoration and repair.
• Assists with emergency repairs, including water leak response and other facility-related maintenance needs.
• Performs additional duties as assigned by management.
