About The Position

Provide manual labor support for concrete technicians to ensure the safety and quality of transportation for City of Enid residents. This role involves cleaning and preparing construction sites, digging trenches, erecting scaffolding, and removing debris. The Construction Laborer will assist Concrete Technicians in operating equipment for concrete and asphalt application, as well as tamping materials. Responsibilities include operating City vehicles for transport, assisting with concrete removal using jackhammers, measuring and marking construction areas, and preparing surfaces for concrete application. The role also involves assisting in setting concrete forms, spreading and smoothing concrete, lifting materials, lubricating and cleaning machinery, and providing assistance to other departments as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of highways and roads.
  • Working knowledge of operating various hand and power tools of all types: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists.
  • Ability to operate a backhoe, skid steer, and front end loader.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to assist and support others.
  • Able to operate telephone, PC, copier, and other basic business machines.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to work with the fingers.
  • Normal vision, with or without corrective lenses.
  • Ability to lift/carry 100 lbs occasionally; exert push/pull force of 100 lbs.
  • Ability to shovel and push material using tools.
  • Ability to kneel and squat to perform concrete work low to the ground.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, and clean up rubble, debris, and other waste materials.
  • Assist Concrete Technicians in operating equipment used to apply concrete, asphalt, or other materials to roadways and parking lots, or equipment used for tamping gravel, dirt, or other materials.
  • Operate City vehicles to transport equipment and/or supplies and travel between work sites.
  • Assist with removing existing concrete using a jackhammer and clear work area of debris.
  • Measure, mark, or record openings or distances to layout areas where construction work will be performed.
  • Clean chipped areas, using wire brush, and feel and observe surface to determine if it is rough or uneven.
  • Start engine, move throttles, controls, and levers to operate backhoe, skid steer, and front end loader.
  • Assist in setting the forms that hold concrete to the desired pitch and depth, and align them.
  • Assist in spreading, leveling, and smoothing concrete, using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.
  • Lift rubble to remove old concrete.
  • Reach and lift to get equipment from truck bed.
  • Lubricate, clean, or repair machinery, equipment, or tools.
  • Provide assistance to other departments as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.
