About The Position

Work involves activities such as reviewing construction drawings, inspection for compliance with the construction drawings and permit requirements, construction of private and public stormwater systems, streets/roadways, curbs, sidewalks, and bridges. Work is specialized in nature and requires the coordination of the workforce, materials, and equipment to accomplish tasks. Work is evaluated by observation in progress and review of completed tasks.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience performing inspections, construction, or maintenance work related to roadways, bridges, or public works infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local rules, regulations, and code requirements related to Public Works operations and construction activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, permits, and related technical documents.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and inspection or reporting software.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently while performing field inspections.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Must pass a background screening process.
  • Must complete the Florida Stormwater, Erosion, and Sedimentation Control Inspector (FSESCI) Qualified Inspector Tier II (Inspector Level) within 12 months.
  • Must obtain Advanced Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification within twelve (12) months of appointment.
  • Must obtain Level II Stormwater Technician Certification within eighteen (18) months of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • An Associate’s degree in public administration, engineering, construction management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Current certifications related to construction inspection, stormwater management, or traffic control (such as FDOT Temporary Traffic Control/Maintenance of Traffic, stormwater inspection, or infrastructure inspection certifications) are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts field inspections of construction projects and activities within the City’s right-of-way to ensure compliance with approved plans, permits, codes, and City standards.
  • Inspects public and private infrastructure projects, including roadways, sidewalks, curbs, drainage systems, paving, grading, pavement markings, signage, and related improvements.
  • Identifies deficiencies within the City’s right-of-way and reports maintenance or repair needs to the appropriate Public Works divisions.
  • Verifies the placement and installation of infrastructure elements such as light poles, electrical conduits, and service points, landscaping, irrigation systems, and bridges.
  • Reviews construction plans, specifications, permits, and material testing reports (including concrete, asphalt, and compaction) to confirm compliance with project requirements.
  • Prepares inspection reports, maintains photographic documentation, and ensures accurate recordkeeping of field inspections and findings.
  • Communicates inspection results and project status effectively with supervisors, contractors, consultants, other departments, and the public as needed.
  • Responds to emergency situations and participates in emergency operations activities, including infrastructure damage assessments.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required by supervisor.
