About The Position

The City of Leawood is seeking an experienced Construction Inspector to join their Public Works Department. This role is crucial for ensuring the quality and integrity of Leawood's public infrastructure, including streets, curbs, sidewalks, storm sewers, and right-of-way improvements. The inspector will verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, City standards, and applicable requirements. Responsibilities include monitoring construction, documenting progress, coordinating materials testing, verifying quantities, and identifying field issues to ensure projects are built safely, accurately, and to high standards. This position offers an opportunity to be directly involved in shaping Leawood's infrastructure and contributing to the safety, accessibility, and quality of life for residents and visitors.

Requirements

  • Six (6) years of experience in the construction industry and inspection/field experience, or equivalent experience (Associate’s degree in construction management or related field plus four (4) years of related experience).
  • Certifications and trainings required to have or be able to achieve within the time frame determined by the Director of Public Works include ABC’s of BMPs, Erosion and Sediment Control Done Right, KDOT’s Inspection Course for Basic Structures, Asphalt and Concrete Paving, ACI Concrete Testing Certification, IMSA’s Work Zone Traffic Control Course, and NHI’s Pipe Installation, Inspection, and Quality Technician.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suites.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
  • Desire career growth and development in the construction management field.
  • Experience working on multi-faceted construction projects.
  • Experience working on various projects, from flood reduction to traffic safety to multimillion-dollar street reconstructions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to successfully manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.

  • Experience as a Construction Inspector in a municipality or public works department.
  • Completed the ABC’s of BMPs, Erosion and Sediment Control Done Right and IMSA’s Work Zone Traffic Control Course training.
  • Completed the KDOT’s Inspection Course for Basic Structures, Asphalt and Concrete Paving.
  • Hold an ACI Concrete Testing Certification and NHI’s Pipe Installation, Inspection, and Quality Technician.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and maintain daily records of construction activities for public infrastructure projects (streets, curbs, storm sewers) to ensure contractor compliance with approved plans, specifications, and City standards.
  • Inspect sidewalks, sidewalk ramps, and driveway approach construction to verify dimensions, alignment, slopes, and sub-grade meet ADA standards, plans, contract requirements, and City standards.
  • Verify that required right-of-way permits have been obtained, confirm project information including contractor details, and ensure proper restoration of right-of-way areas.
  • Prepare daily inspection reports, coordinate materials testing, measure quantities, and calculate pay estimates for assigned projects.
  • Conduct final inspections of Public Improvement and Infrastructure projects before bond expiration.
  • Oversee the installation and maintenance of erosion control and traffic control devices.
  • Assist Engineers and Right-of-Way Technicians with obtaining right-of-way and easements from property owners.
  • Assist with snow removal operations and other emergency activities that may require working extended shifts.
