About The Position

This position is based on the Tempe campus however may require working at other ASU campus locations based on program need. This requisition will remain open until filled. Essential Duties: Observes commercial construction work in progress to ensure conformance with applicable code requirements and acceptable standards of workmanship. Prepare reports and inspection documentation, maintain all required records. Supervise special inspections and assists building inspections on difficult or unusual code requirements for residential and commercial structures. Conduct field/site visits when needed. Inspect sites to identify potential construction deficiencies due to existing items not being reflected in construction plans. Consult with architects, engineers, designers, and contractors concerning deficiencies with structural and non-structural requirements Review existing mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems for safety requirements. Consult with customers to explain codes and regulations, review plans prior to submittal. Research alternate products, materials and methods of construction for compliance and make recommendations to the Building Official. Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures as directed by the Building Official. Establish schedules and methods for plan reviews and permit issuance. Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities. Recommend improvements and modifications or changes in codes to resolve design and interpretation issues and to accommodate new materials, design concepts and initiatives. Attend various project meetings to provide information on ASU’s building code requirements, policies and procedures. Prepare regularly scheduled and Ad Hoc reports Answer questions and provide amplifying data concerning code and plan check reports; advise building inspectors of any potential issues. Serve as technical advisor Interpret codes and regulations related to plans review and construction projects; research and bring forward recommendations for updates. May review building plans to determine code compliance and compliance with applicable laws, codes and standards under the jurisdiction of ASU. May approve or deny plans as appropriate, sign off on approved plans and legal documents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment.
  • Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination post offer of employment to include asbestos worker clearance, respiratory clearance questionnaire and respiratory fit test.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the I-Codes, ADA and NFPA standards.
  • Evidence of Building Inspector certification from the International Code Council (ICC).
  • Evidence of Commercial Electrical Inspector certification or certifications in other disciplines from the ICC.
  • Evidence of Commercial Combination Inspector certification from the ICC.
  • Evidence of one additional ICC certification within six (6) months of employment date.
  • Evidence of Building Plans Examiner certification from the International Code Council ICC.
  • Experience in performing plan reviews for conformance to building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing codes for commercial projects.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
