About The Position

HDR is hiring a Kansas City Construction Inspection Intern to support its Field Services team on civil infrastructure projects, which may include roads, bridges, water and wastewater facilities, pump stations, and pipelines. The intern assists inspectors with observing, documenting, monitoring, and inspecting construction progress; coordinating materials sampling and testing; measuring work and materials; checking layouts and dimensions; interpreting construction documents; and recording project information and daily activities. The intern receives general supervision from a Senior Inspector, who reviews work in progress. The position is subject to a preemployment drug test. The role may involve outdoor work at construction sites in all seasons and environmental conditions, travel to remote sites outside the Kansas City metro area, and overtime, including nights and weekends.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Engineering program.
• Attention to detail.

• Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding and navigate structures of varying heights.
• Ability to lift and carry equipment needed for inspections and testing.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations in geometry and algebra.
• Ability to work overtime, including nights and weekends.
• Ability to travel to remote work sites outside the Kansas City metro area.

Responsibilities

• Assist an Inspector in conducting and documenting observations of civil infrastructure construction as it progresses.
• Monitor, record, and inspect progress on construction projects.
• Assist with coordinating field materials sampling and testing, including concrete slump and air testing, casting concrete test cylinders, and in-place soil compaction testing.
• Assist with measurements and calculations to determine quantities of work performed and materials required.
• Check work layout and dimensions using tape measures, rules, and other instruments.
• Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications, identifying discrepancies or conflicts.
• Compose reports and daily logs documenting construction activities, field inspections, tests, personnel, equipment, weather, and other information relevant to work progress.
• Enter and record construction project information in computer programs.
• Perform other duties as required.
