About The Position

King County Road Services Division, Engineering Section is seeking two field inspectors in the Construction Management and Inspection Unit to perform engineering work involving inspection of on-site construction activities, administering construction contract, and providing documentation of activities associated with the implementation of Capital Improvement Projects. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field and civil engineering experience, or relevant education and experience that demonstrates one's knowledge of construction and engineering principles related to the construction and resurfacing of road, bridge, and stream construction projects.
  • Experience demonstrating progressively responsible construction experience with a strong emphasis in construction practices including, but not limited to: constructing embankments, excavations, bridge foundations, bridge substructure and superstructure, drainage improvement projects, retaining walls, concrete placement, grading, surfacing, paving, membrane liner installation, stream bank protection, pavement marking, constructing and or installation of traffic barrier and guardrail, illumination and traffic signal construction.
  • Experience with Capital Improvement construction contracts.
  • Knowledge and experience in reading and interpreting engineering Contract plans, Washington State Department of Transportation Standard Specifications for road, bridge, and municipal construction, and Contract Special Provisions.
  • Knowledge of survey that consists of experience reading and interpreting field stakes such as slope stakes, drainage stakes, and location stakes for various construction activities and features.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse team environment and to maintain effective working relationships with citizens, management, and other agencies or interest groups.
  • Demonstrated experience in problem solving and conflict resolution related to construction contract management.
  • Skill in Microsoft Office products such as Teams, One Drive, Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint.
  • Along with review and editing programs such as Adobe Pro or Bluebeam.
  • Strong oral and written communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work long hours and under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License at the time of hire.
  • Specific vision abilities include close, distant, and color; Physical activity includes lifting up to 30 lbs. to at least waist height; carrying and moving objects; Work to be performed in the office and field; Must be able to safely negotiate and traverse steep slopes; Must be able to bend and lift to load equipment into vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the on-site inspector for construction projects which may include various types of construction such as: new and existing roadway, bridges, retaining walls, large culverts (concrete and steel), drainage systems and facilities, earthwork, curb, gutter and sidewalk placement, paving (concrete and asphalt), illumination, traffic signal systems, traffic guardrail and barrier, stream enhancement with bank restoration and features, mitigation sites, landscaping, and installing traffic control and safety features.
  • Perform construction inspection duties for Roads Division in accordance with the Local Agency Guidelines (LAG) for Contracting Agencies, WSDOT Construction Manual, the WSDOT Standard Specifications and the Contract Documents for a variety of County Road Infrastructure- Capital Improvement Projects including but not limited to:
  • Act as on-site representative for Roads Construction Inspection team between the Contractor and King County.
  • Measuring and documenting the use of specific quantities for the project.
  • Ensuring materials are certified prior to acceptance for payment.
  • Ensure contract compliance with executed Contract Docements.
  • Preparation of monthly progress payments.
  • Monitoring and documenting of specific construction activities on the project.
  • Support Construction Management staff on various tasks as assigned.
  • Take project photos to document construction progress or on-site conditions.
  • Collaborate with support services associated with the project which includes Materials Laboratory, Survey, Environmental, Traffic and involved private Utilities.
