About The Position

The Civil/Structural Construction Field Engineer will serve as the site project team’s field-level subject matter expert for structural, concrete, building envelope, and site/civil construction supporting brownfield construction. This position will support the rehabilitation and modernization of existing facility infrastructure as well as installation of new systems required to support advanced manufacturing operations. The Field Engineer will work closely with the internal site project team, design team, general contractor, trade contractors, geotechnical engineers, testing agencies, equipment vendors, and internal manufacturing stakeholders. The Field Engineer will be expected to have working knowledge of industrial infrastructure to support the Superintendent in evaluating field conditions, coordinating construction activities, tracking physical progress, and driving resolution of technical and construction issues before they affect the project schedule.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Management, or related field; significant equivalent industrial construction experience may be considered.
  • 3-5+ years of structural/civil construction experience with a strong preference for industrial or manufacturing facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience with concrete foundations and structural modifications.
  • Strong understanding of concrete construction, reinforcing steel, structural steel, earthwork, and civil construction means and methods.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, civil drawings, geotechnical reports, specifications, shop drawings, and equipment foundation requirements.
  • Experience reviewing RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Experience tracking installed quantities and construction production.
  • Working knowledge of construction quality-control, inspection, testing, and documentation requirements.
  • Ability to independently identify field problems and drive them toward resolution.

  • Experience supporting defense, aerospace, shipbuilding, automotive, heavy manufacturing, or similarly complex industrial facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with the Superintendent to drive execution of the construction schedule.
  • Understand structural and civil milestones, equipment foundation completion dates, equipment delivery dates, and critical-path activities.
  • Participate in weekly construction planning and coordination meetings.
  • Perform weekly field walks and track measurable installed quantities.
  • Track progress for demolition, excavation, aggregate placement, reinforcing steel, concrete, structural steel, underground utilities, paving, and other applicable work.
  • Validate contractor-reported progress against actual installed work.
  • Identify activities that are trending behind schedule and determine the underlying constraints.
  • Support three- and six-week look-ahead planning.
  • Identify design, material, equipment, manpower, access, inspection, testing, safety, and quality constraints affecting upcoming work.
  • Work with the Superintendent and contractors to develop recovery plans when work falls behind schedule.
  • Coordinate foundation completion dates directly with manufacturing equipment delivery and installation requirements.
  • Review structural and civil RFIs for technical completeness, constructability, field applicability, and potential schedule impacts.
  • Maintain a log of outstanding RFIs that could affect upcoming construction activities and drive timely resolution.
  • Review concrete mix designs, reinforcing steel shop drawings, structural steel shop drawings, anchor systems, crane submittals, civil materials, building envelope systems, and other technical submittals.
  • Review equipment foundation requirements provided by manufacturing equipment vendors.
  • Verify approved RFIs and submittals are incorporated into field installations and documented as a redline set to be converted to as-builts.
  • Coordinate discrepancies between design documents, existing conditions, geotechnical information, surveys, and equipment vendor requirements.
  • Identify long-lead structural or civil materials that could impact field execution.
  • Verify structural and civil construction complies with approved drawings, specifications, submittals, RFIs, manufacturer requirements, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Verify required inspections, testing, checklists, preparatory meetings, and quality documentation are completed in advance of scheduled construction.
  • Participate in preparatory, initial, and follow-up inspections as appropriate.
  • Identify deficient or nonconforming work and coordinate corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with third-party testing and inspection agencies.
  • Monitor soil density and compaction testing.
  • Monitor reinforcing steel and embed inspections.
  • Monitor concrete sampling, slump, air content, temperature, cylinder testing, and strength results.
  • Verify required Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), excavation permits, lift plans, hot-work permits, demolition plans, fall-protection planning, confined-space documentation, and other applicable safety requirements are completed before work begins.
  • Ensure required safety documentation and approvals are addressed sufficiently in advance so they do not become schedule constraints.
