About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the Construction Manager, the Construction Engineering Technician inspects construction of all types of publicly and privately funded city-wide improvement projects and watches for public safety. Incumbents must demonstrate the ability to independently perform advanced field engineering inspections. This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and strong communication, technical, and organizational skills. Additional responsibilities include performing topographic surveys, land retracements, and construction staking. Employees in this job classification routinely exercise interpretative judgement within prescribed standards and procedures with significant opportunity for discretion and independent action.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Five or more years of public works and/or construction experience is required.
  • Must possess a valid Kansas driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Post-secondary education in similar or related field is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of surveying is preferred.
  • KDOT certifications are highly desirable.
  • Must obtain KDOT Basic Inspection certification within one year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects the construction of street improvements (i.e. paving, curb and gutter, sidewalk, etc.), bridges, storm drains and boxes, underground utility systems including lift stations, reservoirs, pressure stations, force mains, parks, grading and public and private street systems.
  • Interprets construction plans, specifications, and detail sheets.
  • Inspects pipe laying for alignment, grade, jointing, fittings and materials.
  • Inspects subgrade and base grade from compaction, alignment, grades and materials.
  • Uses standard survey principles to survey city projects.
  • Reviews detour plans, haul routes, and erosion control plans.
  • Maintains logs, records, record drawings (as-builts), office filing.
  • Keeps miscellaneous records and prepares reports as needed.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations to the Construction Inspection Supervisor for the solution of special construction issues and site conditions.
  • Schedules and makes arrangements for construction survey, soil and material testing, and other services or materials; Conducts a variety of tests on new facilities.
  • Assists in the development of technical reports by completing research and gathering applicable supporting data.
