About The Position

Lead a skilled and versatile team that plays a vital role in maintaining, improving, and enhancing the UW-Madison campus! This Construction Crew Supervisor role supervises a team of nine full-time employees within the Physical Plant Grounds Department. The team is responsible for a wide range of campus and off-site maintenance activities, including hardscape maintenance, sign maintenance, storm water structure maintenance, street sweeping, and equipment maintenance. Above and beyond campus maintenance, the supervisor works closely with team members, campus partners, other Physical Plant shops, and external vendors to coordinate and complete projects related to hardscape and landscape construction projects. The team also manages unique and highly visible projects, including maintenance of the Hagenah Fountain and installation of the Lot 60 pier. This position plays a critical role in planning, coordinating, and implementing the department’s snow removal program. The Grounds Department is responsible for maintaining safe access across a significant portion of the UW-Madison campus, including roads, sidewalks, parking lots, steps, curb ramps, and bus stops. Requirements

• Demonstrated experience leading teams or supervising employees for at least one year
• At least one year of experience in landscape, hardscape, or outdoor facilities maintenance and operations
• At least one year of experience performing or managing professional snow removal services
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Outlook, and other workplace technology applications
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills in a collaborative work environment
• Driver’s license required – valid and meets UW Risk Management standards
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months of hire

Responsibilities

• Respond to customer safety needs in regard to snow removal during scheduled and non-scheduled work hours.
• Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
• Develops and schedules unit operational work plans
• Plan, schedule and implement the maintenance of campus concrete, asphalt, gravel paths and retaining walls
• Oversee maintenance of equipment utilized by staff and assist in procuring new equipment and supplies needed
• Schedules logistics and secures resources for the completion of established projects
• Plan, schedule and implement a maintenance program for fences and signs
• Communicates unit goals and objectives, implements unit operational policies and procedures, and provides training and feedback to ensure safety and compliance
