About The Position

This is responsible technical work consisting of field inspections during construction, alterations, or repairs on all types of structures to enforce code compliance. Additional responsibilities include review of amendments and other changes to construction documents. This position shall serve as a liaison with local governmental agencies, utilities and contractors. Work is performed under the guidance of the Building Official.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school or an equivalency diploma.
  • Minimum five years of verifiable successful experience either as a commercial building code inspector and/or plans examiner, licensed building contractor, graduate architect, or Florida registered architect., or electrician, carpenter, plumber, or HVAC mechanic.
  • Basic understanding and knowledge of use of current technology, as required for the position.
  • Experience in data entry and Microsoft Suite.
  • Must be a certified Standard Building Code Inspector in one of the following classifications: Building/Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, or Fire in accordance with Chapter 468 Part XII of the Florida Statutes or be able to obtain certification as such within eleven months from the date of hire.
  • Must have certification in the State Requirements or Educational Facilities (SREF) per Section 453 of the Florida Building Code or be able to obtain certification within eleven months from the date of hire.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license or obtain within 30 work days and the ability to drive.

Responsibilities

  • Become familiar with all project related construction documents and submittals for compliance with all applicable building codes, State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF) design intent of approved construction documents, and other regulatory standards.
  • Inspect all of the District’s construction projects during the following construction phases as required by Florida Building Code and State Statutes for the applicable license held by the employee.
  • Enforce all provisions of approved construction documents and applicable codes and standards.
  • Maintain a weekly inspection report of each project under construction.
  • File these reports through the assigned clerical staff as part of the permanent project records.
  • Monitor the progress of the project and the quality of work for the Facilities Department.
  • Certify that construction projects are complete using the required Florida Department of Education forms and/or Building Code Compliance Office forms, and inform the administrator when the building is ready for final inspection.
  • Coordinate the completion and final inspections of projects with the Building Official.
  • Maintain certifications through continuing education courses and seminars.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
