About The Position

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is seeking Conservation/Historic Preservation Workers (CW’s) for temporary seasonal positions not exceeding six months, to be located at various sites across Illinois, including Lake Murphysboro. These roles involve performing routine maintenance and janitorial duties for site buildings and public use areas, such as groundskeeping, cleaning facilities, and trash disposal. Workers will also operate and maintain equipment and vehicles, assist with habitat management and hunting programs, and some may be involved in site interpretation. The Office of Land Management, which includes the Historic Sites Division, manages nearly 400 land parcels and facilitates outdoor recreation and conservation through various programs, from interpretive programming to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of eight years of elementary school.
  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Must be at least 17 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Elementary knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment essential to grounds and building maintenance.
  • Ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and trucks.
  • Must be able to carry up to 60 pounds and walk over rough, broken terrain.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and janitorial duties of site buildings and public use areas, including groundskeeping, cleaning shelters, shower houses, and privies, and picking up and disposing of trash, litter, and debris.
  • Assist in area preparation and operation for various hunting seasons.
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles, such as cleaning/repairing hand tools, changing oil, fluids, filters, and spark plugs.
  • Assist in the inspection of public use areas for public safety and hazards.
  • Explain site rules and regulations to users.
  • Assist in habitat management and various hunting programs.
  • Perform site interpretation at select locations (in addition to or in place of other duties).
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
