About The Position

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) is seeking a self-motivated candidate for the role of Conservation Educator I in the Information and Education Division. This position plays a key role in engaging the public, highlighting the importance of conservation, and showcasing the agency's leadership in protecting Kentucky’s natural resources. The Central District Branch is looking for an individual to educate and inform the public about Kentucky’s native animal species and how the KDFWR helps to conserve them. This is an Interim position, meaning it is established to address a one-time or recurring need of less than nine (9) months duration and is exempt from the classified service.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural or physical science, education, recreation, or related field.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification.
  • Must obtain either a hunting or fishing license issued by the KDFWR, Hunter Education certification, and a certification in first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) during the first six months of employment.
  • Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification.
  • Must be able to use firearms and archery equipment safely and proficiently.
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects.
  • Must be able to carry 25 pounds of equipment several hundred yards.
  • Must be able to operate outdoors during inclement weather.
  • Must be able to run, stoop, bend, push, pull, and lift heavy object or child from an unsafe place and traverse rugged terrain.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledgeable about the principles of conservation education, care, and training of birds of prey, and a variety of other native animals, such as bears, bobcats, snakes, etc.
  • Have classroom and public speaking experience and be able to engage diverse audiences effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Possess at least one certification in hunter education, hunter education instructor, boater education, Project Wild, American Red Cross cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, automated external defibrillator (AED).

Responsibilities

  • Schedules and presents conservation education programs to 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in an assigned area.
  • Assists the camp staff and promote the mission of agency by providing instruction at the conservation camps in regard to: the education programs and the outdoor and shooting skills.
  • Researches literature pertinent to conservation education programs; arranges power point presentations for educational use.
  • Assists with youth hunting, fishing, and outdoor skills events; performs outreach programs for the general public within district.
  • Distributes and processes camp applications; arranges camper transportation within district; answers parent inquiries regarding camp applications.
  • Other duties as assigned.
