Reporting to the Director, Engineering, the Principal Mechanical Engineering Advisor is responsible for all onboard mechanical systems for VIA Rail's new Long-distance, Regional, and Remote (LDRR) fleet programs, covering both locomotives and passenger cars. As VIA Rail's highest mechanical authority, this role serves as the primary interface between internal stakeholders and rolling stock manufacturers throughout the design, manufacturing, validation, fleet commissioning, and transition to commercial operation phases. The incumbent plays a key role in ensuring mechanical solutions are safe, compliant, reliable, and suitable for long-term operation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent);
  • Member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ);
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in rolling stock or railway mechanical systems;
  • Strong technical judgment and decision-making ability;
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority in a matrix organization;
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills (root cause analysis);
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills;
  • Comfortable in complex and multidisciplinary project environments;
  • Bilingual (French and English).

Responsibilities

  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in mechanical engineering for LDRR programs (locomotives and passenger cars);
  • Review, challenge, and approve supplier designs, technical documentation, and CDRLs related to mechanical systems;
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, safety, and technical requirements;
  • Validate that proposed mechanical solutions meet operational, maintenance, and service needs throughout the lifecycle;
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including Operations, Maintenance, Services, and Project Management;
  • Lead technical discussions with rolling stock manufacturers and external consultants;
  • Support smooth fleet commissioning and its transition to commercial operation.
