About The Position

MDA is seeking a CONOPS and Mission Analysis System Engineer to own the definition, development and documentation of CONOPS, mission scenarios, operational concepts and quantitative mission analyses for current and next‑generation earth observation and communications satellite missions. The engineer will work closely with customers, prime contractors and internal multidisciplinary teams to translate stakeholder needs into clear, traceable operational concepts that guide system architecture, requirements allocation, risk assessment and program planning.

Requirements

  • M.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics
  • 0-2 years of experience in satellite LEO/MEO mission planning and operations.
  • Strong understanding of aerospace system engineering fundamentals, space environment and orbit mechanics.
  • Hands-on individual who can support systems integration processes and capability to test systems and resolve problems.
  • High degree of attention to detail.
  • Experience with Confluence and JIRA.
  • Demonstrated capability to efficiently work with little to no supervision.
  • Ability to distill complex problems to fundamentals to solve with analysis, similarity, or creativity.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills in English; knowledge of French will be considered an asset (Contact with clients outside Quebec and work on deliverables in English).

Responsibilities

  • Gather functional, performance, environmental, and safety requirements from the client’s high‑level mission objectives.
  • Facilitate workshops, interviews, and trade‑study sessions to capture both explicit and implicit operational needs.
  • Contribute to writing sections of the CONOPS document (e.g., mission‑phase descriptions, contingency scenarios) under the direction of the lead author.
  • Produce simple diagrams (timelines, activity diagrams) using Visio or Enterprise Architect.
  • Execute predefined simulation models (orbit propagation, coverage, link budget) using department tools such as STK, GMAT, and MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Collect results and prepare summary tables for trade‑study review meetings.
  • Translate CONOPS outcomes into system‑level requirements and maintain bidirectional traceability throughout the program’s life‑cycle.
  • Assist in creating and updating interface diagrams (ICDs, data‑flow diagrams) based on specifications from the spacecraft and ground‑segment teams.
  • Document and communicate technical status, risk assessments and trade‑study results to senior management and/or customers or partners.
  • Respond to stakeholder information requests (customers, suppliers) with guidance from the mentor.
  • Develop verification plans, test matrices, test scripts, and validation procedures to ensure operational readiness.
  • Present CONOPS and mission‑analysis results at SRR, PDR, CDR, and ORR reviews.
  • Ensure all artifacts, analyses, deliverables, and documents are version‑controlled within the PLM environment.
  • Support the Spacecraft operations team in critical phases.
