About The Position

Join National Grid and play a key role in helping us understand the health and performance of our critical transmission assets. As a Condition Monitoring Technician, you'll be at the forefront of deploying, maintaining, and supporting innovative condition monitoring technologies across our substations, helping to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the electricity transmission network. Working as part of a specialist team, you'll support the collection and management of vital asset condition data, enabling informed decisions on maintenance, investment, and network performance. This is a hands-on role that combines technical expertise, problem solving, and field-based activity, offering the opportunity to work with a wide range of technologies and equipment across the National Grid Electricity Transmission. A vacancy has arisen in the North of the country, with a particular focus on the North East/West regions, to support the growing demands of the Condition Monitoring team. Whilst the role operates on a nationwide basis and requires regular travel to substations and operational sites, establishing a dedicated Condition Monitoring Technician in this area will strengthen regional coverage. Regular travel to substations and operational sites is an essential part of the position, with a company vehicle provided for business use. Overnight stays will be required where necessary, with accommodation and subsistence expenses covered. When site attendance isn't required, you'll have the flexibility to work from home.

Requirements

• Technical knowledge relating to the electrical and safety aspects across the broad range of National Grid Substation assets, including fault finding expertise and plant analysis.
• Technical understanding of the scientific and engineering principles of Condition Monitoring technologies.
• Knowledge of Electricity Transmission substation layouts & assets.
• Demonstrable experience of interpreting technical data and solution development.
• Experience of prioritising work based on technical judgement of asset condition and risk.
• Excellent problem solving and prioritisation skills.

Nice To Haves

• UAV experience and licences (GVC or equivalent) extremely advantageous

Responsibilities

• Work hands-on with a diverse range of Condition Monitoring technologies and techniques, including UAV (drone) surveys and inspections, thermal and RF camera investigations, substation visual inspection surveys, Condition Monitoring trailer deployment and maintenance, CBTect installation and analysis, Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA), SF6 gas surveys, and GIS Partial Discharge (PD) monitoring.
• Follow National Grids safe working practices, familiarising and keeping up to date with training and authorisations.
• Demonstrate a proactive interest in emerging technologies within the condition monitoring and engineering fields, staying informed on new tools, methods, and innovations.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of CM processes by working collaboratively with the CM Lead and Policy Engineer to refine ways of working, support development of best practices, and ensure the department evolves in a fast‑paced environment.
• Creating appropriate safety documentation (RAMS) to carry out works.
• Provide national technical support to field operatives regarding anything that falls under the remit of condition monitoring.
• Support the design, communication, monitoring and continuous improvement of processes to deliver accurate and efficient CM surveys across ET substations.
