Senior/Staff Computer Vision Engineer

CivilGrid•Boston, MA
•$149,405 - $214,020•Hybrid

About The Position

CivilGrid is hiring an experienced Computer Vision Engineer to help shape the company’s computer vision capabilities and develop solutions that support the scalability of its civil design platform. The role focuses on identifying opportunities in CivilGrid’s data and workflows where computer vision and machine learning can make an impact, then building both internal and customer-facing features. The position reports to the Head of Strategic Initiatives and is hybrid, with work from the Boston, Massachusetts office expected at least three days per week. The engineer will work with classical computer vision techniques, prepare data, train and evaluate vision models, and combine vision-language models, vision-based models, and classical computer vision where a single approach is insufficient. The role also includes building continuously monitored and validated computer vision pipelines with evaluation harnesses and quality metrics. CivilGrid describes its environment as a rapidly growing, in-person-collaborative but remote-friendly team with direct feedback, substantial ownership, and close proximity to customers.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of experience building computer vision systems in Python using tools such as OpenCV, NumPy, and PyTorch, or equivalents.
  • Strong grounding in classical computer vision, including feature extraction and matching, geometric transformations, image registration, and robust estimation such as RANSAC.
  • Strong grounding in machine learning and machine-learning-based computer vision, including CNNs, transformers, and embedding spaces.
  • Hands-on experience preparing datasets and training, fine-tuning, and evaluating vision-based models.
  • Ability to work autonomously, move quickly, and take initiative.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate ideas clearly and collaborate effectively.
  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with messy real-world imagery, including scanned documents, OCR outputs, and low-quality rasters.
  • Familiarity with geospatial tooling such as GDAL/rasterio and coordinate reference systems.
  • Experience integrating VLM/LLM APIs into production workflows.
  • Experience with MLOps.

Responsibilities

  • Explore CivilGrid’s data and workflows to identify where computer vision and machine learning solutions can have the most impact.
  • Apply classical computer vision techniques, including feature matching, geometric transformations, and image registration, to build internal and customer-facing features.
  • Prepare training data and train, fine-tune, and validate vision-based models.
  • Develop solutions combining vision-language models, vision-based models, and classical computer vision.
  • Build computer vision pipelines that can be continuously monitored and validated, with evaluation harnesses and quality metrics.

Benefits

  • Meaningful early-stage equity.
  • Company-funded medical, dental, and vision insurance, including medical plans at no cost to the employee.
  • Health and dependent-care flexible spending accounts (FSA).
  • Unlimited paid time off.
  • 401(k) plan.
  • Flexible, remote-friendly work environment.
