About The Position

Under the direction of the Computer Operations Supervisor, this role performs skilled work as a senior machine operator. The position involves assisting with the implementation of new programs and procedures, and requires knowledge of all machine programs and procedures used in the unit. Work is performed in accordance with established methods and procedures. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Requirements

• Considerable knowledge of a wide variety of procedures used in the production of information in a computer operations environment.
• Considerable knowledge of the techniques, principles and practices of computer equipment operations and usage, specifically those of the IBM SYS/38 or equivalent data base system.
• Ability to read and quickly comprehend or grasp the concepts of the manufacturers operating manuals and system concepts.
• Flexibility with scheduling and contingency planning as well as to be able to develop alternatives for production of scheduled applications.
• Ability to recognize deficiencies in source data, application software, production control statements or processing procedures and to advise supervisor promptly for corrections.
• Two years of college training in computer science or four years of on the job experience in the operation of data processing computing systems, of which two years must have been at the level of Computer Operator I or equivalent position in a data processing environment.

Responsibilities

• Implements new programs and procedures by determining problems and bringing them out for special attention.
• Specializes in setting up or changing operator control programs as the operating system requires.
• Orients and trains new operators.
• Prepares system programs for copying and maintaining the operating systems or libraries.
• Performs special assignments which require intimate knowledge of the programs and procedures of most all of the data processing work produced by the unit.
• Notifies supervisor of system status, libraries status, applications processing status and of any equipment requiring maintenance.
• Initiates action with equipment manufacturers when machine fails or requires maintenance.
• Operates a variety of data processing and related equipment including terminals, consoles, data entry equipment, calculators, adding machines and typewriters.
• Performs other related work as required.
