About The Position

The Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT) is seeking to hire qualified candidates for the role of Computer Operations Technician. This position supports the Department of Employment Security (IDES) by performing difficult production control procedures, preparing job streams, and monitoring outputs. The role involves performing complex technical functions related to the operations of data processing equipment to ensure computer application output is printed accurately and in a timely manner. Responsibilities include checking computer application output for acceptability and conformance to established standards, regulating production mainframe printers for proper formatting, and loading paper stock into these printers. This position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic, creative thinking, problem-solving environment.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
  • Requires one year (1) of related data processing experience.
  • Requires the ability to verify identity.
  • Requires employment authorization to accept permanent full-time position with the State of Illinois.
  • Requires the ability to pass a position specific, agency required background check.
  • Requires self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires the ability to use agency supplied equipment such as laptop, personal computer, work cell phone and any other required equipment or devices.
  • Requires the ability to lift and carry objects or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Requires the ability to serve in an on-call capacity.
  • Requires the ability to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, short notice, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Requires the ability to work outside of normal hours to meet deadlines.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of professional experience in console operations, peripheral equipment handling, and supporting staff in large scale computer system environments.
  • One (1) year of professional experience performing mainframe monitoring, troubleshooting system interruptions, and carrying out corrective measures to sustain system uptime.
  • One (1) year of professional experience validating system output, coordinating with users on standards, and managing job execution through Time Sharing Option / Interactive System Productivity Facility (TSO/ISPF) or equivalent tools.
  • One (1) year of professional experience managing computer supply processes, from ordering and monitoring inventory to coordinating delivery and placement of equipment.
  • Working knowledge of preventive maintenance practices for computer hardware, including cleaning and maintaining printers, card readers, tape drives, and related peripheral devices.
  • Ability to analyze operations, recommend improvements, and create accurate shift reports and logs to support system management and staffing.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a Computer Operations Technician for the Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT), supporting the Department of Employment Security (IDES).
  • Performs difficult production control procedures, preparing job streams and monitoring outputs on Night Shift-Team B.
  • Monitors the Application Development Machine (4381) responding to any operator intervention request.
  • Reviews and analyzes computer printouts and punchouts to assure conformance to set standards.
  • Periodically cleans printers, card readers and tape drives to prevent buildup of paper, dust and foreign matter harmful to its operation.
  • Assists supervisor by performing studies and making recommendations related to personnel, equipment and training needs.
  • Assists with the ordering, delivery, placement and relocation of all computer related supplies.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
