This role involves performing a variety of procedures using ionizing radiation, specifically CT scans, as directed. The technologist will communicate effectively with physicians and other healthcare personnel, identify patients and procedures, and inform nursing staff about patients requiring IV sedation or biopsies. They will also fill out questionnaires for patients within a specific age range, accurately position patients for CT procedures, and ensure correct patient transfer and positioning for optimal visibility of anatomy. A deep understanding of scanning protocols is required, with the ability to perform procedures correctly using a protocol book for reference. Studies must be completed in a timely manner and promptly taken to the radiologist for interpretation. The technologist will also be responsible for writing down the time procedures are finished and filmed on the patient board, archiving films, and ensuring they are taken to the radiologist. They will obtain appropriate supplies, prepare and stock the room, ensuring adequate supplies and linens are always available, and clean tables and trays after each patient. Proper technique for injecting IV contrast, including checking the IV with saline and choosing the correct injection method, is essential. Proficiency in filming from the imaging workstation, 3D imaging, and multiplanar reconstruction is also required. The technologist will respond appropriately to codes and emergencies, explain CT procedures to patients and families, obtain completed questionnaires and necessary history, and inform patients and families of any delays. They will also train co-workers and students, assist other technologists when needed, acquire requisitions, check for appropriate clinical information, and charge for procedures, supplies, and surgical codes. Additionally, they will indicate no-film badge wearing and fluoro time, add surgical charges as needed, operate the PAC's system appropriately, verify studies before archiving, report equipment problems to supervisors and document confirmation numbers, and complete appropriate forms for all procedures. A contrast media form must be filled out for all patients receiving IV and rectal contrast. The technologist will communicate with the radiologist to determine appropriate protocols, ensure correct protocols are utilized as prescribed, and perform procedures as directed. They will demonstrate recognition of anatomy and pathology related to the scan, perform warm-up calibrations as needed, maintain competency in the CT department, perform point-of-care testing, and fulfill other assigned duties.
