About The Position

Montana’s Division of Criminal Investigation is a diverse public safety team of professionals who provide a full range of criminal investigative services to state, local, and tribal law enforcement. They handle investigations from homicide to illegal narcotics, criminal records, cybercrime, human trafficking, and missing persons, and also provide training and certification for public safety officers. DCI supports public safety by protecting vulnerable populations, managing sexual and violent offender registries, serving as a communication hub for criminal justice information networks, storing criminal records, conducting arson investigations, and providing intelligence analysis. This specific position is a Compliance Investigator for the Office of Consumer Protection, responsible for professional investigative, compliance, and administrative work related to consumer protection laws. The role involves fielding and processing inquiries and complaints regarding fraudulent, fake, or unfair/deceptive acts or practices. It ensures compliance with state and federal laws through auditing and investigating business establishments and other agencies. Investigations focus on alleged violations of Consumer Protection Laws and regulations, including the Montana Consumer Protection Act, Unfair Trade Practices Act, Personal Solicitation Sales Act, Telemarketing Act, New Motor Vehicle Warranty Act, federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Truth in Lending Laws, and the federal Telemarketing Sales Rule. The position works closely with the Office’s legal team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Accounting, Business or related field
  • Three years of directly related experience
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of investigation
  • Knowledge of rules of evidence
  • Knowledge of state and federal consumer protection laws and concepts
  • Knowledge of civil, criminal, and administrative rules, laws, and penalties
  • Knowledge of constitutional rights of individuals (e.g., privacy, property, and due process rights)
  • Knowledge of business administration principles and practices
  • Knowledge of public information and education
  • Knowledge of presentation methods and techniques
  • Knowledge of business English, spelling and grammar
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution
  • Skill in gathering and analyzing evidence
  • Skill in interviewing witnesses
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in hostile or threatening situations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with subjects, complainants, witnesses, attorneys, court officers, and the general public
  • Ability to operate personal computers including word processing and specialized software
  • Ability to facilitate some entry level negotiation and conflict resolution and resolve conflicts outside of the court system by mutual consent of parties involved
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Products quickly and efficiently
  • Ability to learn specialized software, including the entry of detailed information in the Office’s Case Management System (CMS) and generating CMS reports
