Competency Restoration Professional
About The Position
The Competency Restoration Professional provides individualized education and support to clients who have been found incompetent to proceed in legal matters. Under the direction of the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Director, this position works one-on-one with clients using the State of Minnesota competency restoration curriculum to help them better understand their legal charges, courtroom roles, legal processes, and potential outcomes. This role is ideal for someone who is patient, adaptable, and skilled at meeting people where they are. You will meet with clients regularly, adjusting teaching methods and pacing based on each individual’s comprehension, literacy, attention, disability, mental health needs, and learning style. Responsibilities also include documenting client progress in the electronic medical record (EMR), maintaining consistent scheduling, tracking time and mileage, and completing required administrative documentation. Services are primarily provided in person, with some travel and virtual sessions as appropriate. The position also requires developing and maintaining knowledge of Minnesota competency restoration requirements and relevant court processes and may include providing information to the court regarding a client’s participation and progress when required.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of or experience with the legal and court system, including an understanding of criminal charges and potential penalties.
- Ability to adapt approach to meet clients with varying levels of comprehension, literacy, attention, disability, mental health needs, and other individual circumstances.
- Strong communication skills.
- Strong organization skills.
- Strong documentation skills.
- Strong time-management skills.
- Ability to maintain consistent client schedules.
- Ability to accurately document participation, progress, and services provided.
- Comfortable communicating professionally with court and service professionals.
- Ability to provide information regarding client progress in court when required.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Valid Minnesota driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Successfully complete a Department of Human Services (DHS) background study.
Nice To Haves
- Familiarity with Minnesota Rules 20.01 and 20.02.
- Familiarity with the civil commitment process.
- Familiarity with the role of Forensic Navigators.
