About The Position

General Motors is seeking a Compartment Integration Design Engineer to support General Arrangement and vehicle packaging, 3D part creation for physical buck development, and Virtual Reality/Mixed Reality evaluations for advanced electric vehicle programs. The role connects engineering requirements, vehicle dimensions, 3D geometry, physical evaluation tools, and immersive technology. The engineer will translate program criteria and design intent into accurate General Arrangements, packaging studies, fabrication-ready 3D math, and VR/MR review environments to support decisions about occupant accommodation, visibility, spaciousness, access, and vehicle experience. The position works across disciplines and program teams to maintain reliable dimensional, part, drawing, and review information. The selected candidate will help teams evaluate current status and alternative solutions, communicate findings, address integration issues, and improve methods for General Arrangement work, physical buck development, and immersive evaluation. The role is categorized as hybrid, with the selected candidate expected to report to a specific location at least three times a week or at another frequency set by their manager. Relocation benefits are available to candidates who qualify under company policy. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Technology, Industrial Design, Transportation Design, or a related discipline.
  • At least 2 years of experience with automotive product development, vehicle packaging, dimensional engineering, CAD, product design, or a related engineering or design discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to create or modify accurate 3D CAD geometry and interpret engineering, design, and dimensional requirements.
  • Working knowledge of vehicle integration concepts such as occupant accommodation, visibility, ergonomics, clearances, interfaces, and packaging trade-offs.
  • Ability to work independently on standard deliverables, manage competing priorities, identify issues, and follow through to closure.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical findings through clear models, drawings, studies, and presentations.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with design, engineering, human factors, manufacturing, and program stakeholders.
  • Must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Siemens NX, Teamcenter, VAS, TCVis, VRED, or comparable automotive CAD, PLM, visualization, or immersive-evaluation tools.
  • Experience creating 3D math and 2D drawings for physical mockups, seating bucks, prototypes, fixtures, or fabricated parts.
  • Experience with physical buck development, bench or mill fabrication, foam and wood construction, or shop-ready data preparation.
  • Experience preparing or facilitating Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality, HMD, or tracked physical/virtual evaluations.
  • Familiarity with VR scene setup, coordinate alignment, H-point or eye-point placement, headset/tracker calibration, and competitor or program math preparation.
  • Experience evaluating occupant accommodation, driver visibility, reach, access, spaciousness, storage, or other human-factors attributes.
  • Experience in advanced vehicle development, vehicle architecture, compartment integration, studio integration, or occupant accommodations.
  • Interest in improving repeatability and efficiency through templates, automation, reusable data structures, or standardized processes.

Responsibilities

  • Execute compartment integration and packaging work within assigned vehicle programs and architecture scope.
  • Create, update, and maintain General Arrangements, including criteria, status, and applicable program-level dimensional deliverables.
  • Create and manage 3D math for seating bucks and other physical properties, including wood structure, foam, stringers, touch-point parts, trim, and program-specific content.
  • Convert design and engineering intent into fabrication-ready part geometry, section views, 2D drawings, assembly data, and organized data packages for shop or mill fabrication.
  • Verify part interfaces, assembly relationships, material intent, and dimensional accuracy before releasing or transmitting data for fabrication.
  • Support updates to physical bucks and mixed-reality content so program teams can evaluate current status and alternative solutions.
  • Prepare and support VR/MR reviews for visibility and occupant accommodation, including program math, competitor math, seating buck data, viewpoints, occupant eye points, headset or tracker setup, and scene alignment.
  • Help conduct immersive evaluations for forward field of view, over-the-shoulder visibility, reach, access, spaciousness, and other occupant-related attributes.
  • Capture observations, communicate findings, and translate immersive review results into actionable engineering or design changes.
  • Partner with VCLEs, CAMs, CIDEs, SDEs, VMA, Studio, Human Factors, Safety, Manufacturing, and other cross-functional teams to resolve integration issues.
  • Maintain accurate part, file, drawing, and review information so downstream teams can make decisions from reliable data.
  • Identify non-routine issues, escalate risks with supporting data, and recommend process or tool improvements.
  • Share methods and lessons learned to expand team capability in General Arrangement work, 3D math, physical buck development, and VR/MR execution.

Benefits

  • Relocation benefits for candidates who qualify under company policy.
  • GM provides well-being support at work and at home from day one; further details are available through its Total Rewards resources.
