About The Position
The Comparative Medicine Technician I is responsible for the basic sanitation, disinfection, and maintenance of the animal facility. This role involves daily record-keeping and operation of major laboratory equipment. The technician will perform general husbandry for laboratory animals, including tasks related to cage washing, and will be responsible for stocking inventory of PPE and supplies. Additionally, the CM Tech I will sanitize laboratory spaces, including animal holding rooms, cage wash areas, and associated corridors, adhering to federal, state, and local guidelines. This includes autoclaving all equipment and maintaining temperature records for the autoclave and rack washer. The CM Tech I will provide daily animal care to small animal species within the animal facility. Other duties may be assigned by management.
Requirements
- H.S./G.E.D.
- Minimum 6 months of animal care experience
- Purina Test
Responsibilities
- Provide animals with clean cages, water, and food.
- Identify functional caging equipment and report equipment maintenance needs.
- Sanitize cages using washroom equipment.
- Remove waste material such as bedding and trash.
- Ensure clean and operating equipment, including racks and biological cabinets.
- Make adjustments to equipment as needed and exercise minor decision-making in equipment use.
- Understand the function of various equipment within the facility (tunnel washer, rack washer, autoclave, bottle filler, etc.) to prevent damage or loss of time.
- Provide a clean and safe work environment.
- Report facility damage to the supervisor.
- Maintain a clean work area.
- Sanitize and disinfect cage wash, equipment, and other facility areas.
- Identify, record, and report environmental conditions.
- Record and report issues to the supervisor and/or veterinary staff.
- Comply with institutional certifications and requirements for working with infectious disease waste from BSL-2 and/or BSL-3 environments.
- Follow detailed written instructions in performing routine work with close attention to detail.
- Record cage census as required.
- Provide a clean and safe atmosphere for animals, employees, and facility users.
- Contribute and recommend new ideas and input on problem-solving issues.
- Participate in departmental training on various areas including animal care, facility operations, and employment-related issues.
- Contribute to the workforce and environment by exhibiting newly learned skills and sharing newly found knowledge with others.
- Prepare for ALAT certification.
