About The Position

BAYADA is hiring part-time Companions/Buddies, also described as Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), to support people with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. The role helps clients live more independent and fulfilling lives through companionship, activities, community participation, and personal care assistance as needed. Opportunities are available in Hilo, Kea'au, Mountain View, Pepe'ekeo, Ocean View, Waimea, and surrounding communities on Hawaii's Big Island. DSPs spend time with clients doing favorite hobbies and activities, participate in community integration, errands, and social engagements, and patiently teach and encourage clients while celebrating their achievements. Clinical managers provide support, and the role offers opportunities to develop caregiving skills. Compensation starts at $20 per hour, with higher rates possible when supporting clients with more complex needs. Employees are paid weekly, and mileage is reimbursed. Scheduling is flexible, and most DSPs begin part-time based on client needs and availability, with the possibility of additional hours as cases become available.

Requirements

One year of experience supporting individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Relevant experience may include supporting individuals with disabilities, behavioral health needs, special education, dementia, or Alzheimer's care.
Ability to transport clients to community activities.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Be at least 18 years of age.
Ability to read and write in English.
