About The Position

The Commuter Life Graduate Assistant will oversee the daily operations of the Commuter Lounge, including tracking attendance and usage, managing facility requests, and purchasing needs. This role involves managing expenditures, maintaining inventory, and replenishing supplies. A key responsibility is supervising, mentoring, and developing student workers, including managing their schedules and time tracking. The assistant will also evaluate office needs, monitor program effectiveness, and assist with the development and implementation of office protocols, procedures, and policies. Support for campus partner activities, events, and Commuter Life events is crucial, including assistance with setup, teardown, logistics, and assessment. The role also involves supporting the recruitment, training, and development of student workers and leaders, and providing input for annual budgeting. The position requires the Graduate Assistant to be enrolled in a graduate program at Grand Canyon University, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, uphold the University’s Student Code of Conduct, and work no more than 29 hours per week. They must remain enrolled throughout employment and resolve any incomplete grades. Graduate Assistants are part-time employees and not eligible for benefits beyond those required by law. The role requires supporting the University’s Mission, Doctrinal Statement, and Ethical Position Statement, and assistantships may be revoked if responsibilities are not fulfilled satisfactorily.

Requirements

  • By the start date, the Graduate Assistant must be enrolled in a graduate program at Grand Canyon University, preferably in communications, project management, leadership, business, or a related field.
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 throughout employment. Newly admitted students may use their admission GPA for eligibility.
  • Uphold the University’s Student Code of Conduct.
  • Follow all HR employment processes and successfully complete a pre-employment background check.
  • Work no more than 29 hours per week in accordance with Graduate Assistant employment guidelines.
  • Remain enrolled in a qualifying graduate program throughout employment.
  • Resolve any “Incomplete” grades within the required timeframe to maintain eligibility.
  • Understand that Graduate Assistants are part-time employees and are not eligible for employee benefits except those required by law.
  • Support the University’s Mission, Doctrinal Statement, and Ethical Position Statement.
  • Understand that assistantships may be revoked if responsibilities are not fulfilled satisfactorily.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with attention to detail.
  • Professional, dependable, and able to represent the department and university with integrity.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends based on departmental needs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams.
  • Ability to manage timelines, prioritize tasks, and follow through on assignments.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and support student workers and student leaders.
  • Minimum of one year of related work experience required.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered with supervisor approval.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with project management and social media platforms such as Monday.com, Trello, Instagram, LinkedIn, Hootsuite, YouTube, and TikTok is preferred.
  • Previous involvement in student affairs, campus programming, marketing, communications, or creative/media-related work preferred.
  • Prior leadership, supervisory, peer mentoring, or student leadership experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Commuter Lounge, including tracking lounge attendance and usage.
  • Coordinate facility requests and purchasing needs for the lounge as needed.
  • Manage expenditures, maintain inventory, and replenish supplies.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop student workers assigned to the Commuter Lounge.
  • Manage student worker schedules and time tracking.
  • Evaluate office needs and determine effective methods for completing tasks and meeting departmental goals in a timely manner.
  • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness using assessment and feedback tools.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of office protocols, procedures, and policies.
  • Support the planning, organization, implementation, and participation of campus partner activities and events throughout the year.
  • Attend and support most Commuter Life events and meetings.
  • Assist with event setup, teardown, logistics, and assessment efforts.
  • Assist with recruiting, training, and ongoing development of student workers and student leaders.
  • Provide input for annual budgeting related to Commuter Life programming.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
