About The Position

PROMOTIONAL ONLY This position is open to City of West Covina employees only. Candidates who are not current City employees will not be considered. Under general supervision, performs a variety of non-hazardous support and administrative duties as a non-sworn, non-peace officer in an assigned division of the Police Department, including Field or Traffic Patrol, Crime Prevention, Evidence, Administration, or Investigation. May be assigned additional duties within the Police Department at the direction of the Police Chief. Certain assignments may require shift work. Work hours typically consist of either four (4) ten-hour shifts or three (3) twelve-hour shifts, as determined by departmental needs. Night, weekend, and holiday assignments may be required. This position also participates in an on-call rotation.

Requirements

  • Completion of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university in liberal arts, public administration, or a related field is desirable.
  • A minimum of two (2) years' experience working in a police department or non-public safety agency with duties and responsibilities in record keeping, dealing extensively with the public, and explaining codes and regulations.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record is required.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates and writes a variety of crime reports when non-suspect situations are present.
  • Investigates complaints, cites violations, and prepares reports.
  • Investigates selected traffic collisions and other incidents as assigned.
  • Investigates selected cases of lost and found property.
  • Provides limited advisory assistance and referral services to victims and families.
  • Collects and preserves evidence in accordance with established procedures.
  • Performs fingerprinting.
  • Registers narcotic and sex offenders.
  • Inventories, tags, and disposes of evidence and found property, and maintains security.
  • Releases evidence to court and other parties and transports for analysis or disposal.
  • Organizes and conducts auctions.
  • Conducts public education safety classes and other crime prevention programs including the DARE program.
  • Schedules activities and provides liaison to participating agencies and groups.
  • Composes informational materials, newsletters, and public service announcements for a variety of media.
  • Issues parking citations.
  • Assists in the inspections of commercial vehicles.
  • Performs traffic control.
  • Reports observed traffic hazards.
  • Initiates impound action on abandoned vehicles.
  • Assists stranded motorists.
  • May act as crossing guard.
  • May be assigned desk officer duties.
  • Provides skilled support in assistance to the public in person or by phone, providing information relative to departmental policy and procedures.
  • Creates records of crime reports and complaints.
  • May serve subpoenas.
  • May appear in court to provide testimony.
  • Performs a variety of general clerical tasks in the performance of non-hazardous duty, including typing, compiling and tabulating statistical data.
  • Operates office equipment, including standard typewriters, word processing equipment, or computer remote terminal.
  • Maintains related files and records.
  • Assists the public and sworn personnel in other non-hazardous situations as assigned.
  • Acts as backup expert latent print examiner utilizing the DOJ certified CAL-ID system.
  • Mans the substation at the West Covina Plaza in a public relations capacity by providing a variety of public information materials and answering public inquiries from walk-in visitors.
  • Performs a variety of tasks as related to the upkeep of all police vehicles including maintenance and repairs.
  • Handles the change-over of police vehicles.
  • Obtains repair estimates.
  • Maintains maintenance records on each vehicle.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
