About The Position

This position performs semi-skilled work through both manual labor and by operation of light and heavy equipment for the Community Services Department, specifically within the Street Maintenance Division. Under general supervision, the role involves maintaining roads, bridges, and their appurtenances, as well as performing snow and ice removal. The position requires a working knowledge of light automotive, heavy construction, and mechanized equipment, and involves a variety of labor-intensive tasks. While assignments are designated by a supervisor, the role is expected to work with a degree of autonomy. Details of work are reviewed through personal inspection or discussion with supervision. This position may occasionally direct a small number of laborers assigned to specific tasks and can be moved to assist other divisions as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, etc.)
  • Ability to report to the Central Maintenance Facility (910 Forest Street, Eau Claire) within 45 minutes for snow removal and other emergency operations
  • Possess or obtain (within six months of hire) and maintain a valid Class B CDL with no air brake restrictions
  • Good verbal skills
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations
  • Ability to take direction and work well with others
  • Ability to concentrate and perform accurately
  • Ability to react to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned
  • Ability to back-up fellow co-workers

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in street/highway construction
  • Previous experience in general construction including patching of asphalt/concrete
  • Previous experience working with tools involved in street repairs/construction
  • Previous experience operating heavy equipment
  • Previous experience in snow removal with a single axle plow truck and/or heavy equipment
  • Additional N tanker endorsement

Responsibilities

  • Utilizing a working knowledge of light automotive, heavy construction, and mechanized equipment, performs a variety of labor-intensive tasks such as excavating, mowing, brush cutting, weed trimming, compressor and jack hammer operation, catch basin cleaning, shoveling or raking of asphalt/concrete, installing concrete forms, finishing concrete, handling concrete rings, metal castings, and rebuilding appurtenances within streets and the utility system.
  • Operates single, tandem, and quad-axle dump trucks, light trucks, and other gasoline and diesel-powered equipment safely and economically.
  • Operates mechanical equipment and attachments on trucks and other equipment such as hoists, pumps, winches, spreaders, snowplows, brooms, snow blowers, mowers, etc.
  • Operates all heavy and specialized equipment such as, but not limited to, street sweepers, graders, end loaders with plow/wing/snow blower attachments, utility tractors, skid steers, mowers, asphalt crack sealers, asphalt spray patcher, rollers/compaction equipment, brush mowers, painting equipment, and related apparatus in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Works in heavy traffic while performing assigned tasks.
  • Directs traffic when necessary to ensure safety of pedestrians, motorists, and work crew.
  • Performs minor service work on equipment such as refueling, lubricating, washing, vehicle inspection, and minor maintenance.
  • Completes daily paperwork and timesheets, as well as daily progress reports.
  • Reports to CMF (Central Maintenance Facility) within 45 minutes for snow removal operations and other emergency operations.
  • Performs strenuous, stressful, and heavy manual duties during adverse weather conditions for up to 16 hours per day, 7 days per week.
  • Learns and uses computers associated with assigned equipment.
  • Works as a member of a small group performing maintenance tasks.
  • May be moved to another division to assist in completing a task/project as needed.
