About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Police Department (UPD), Southern Command is conducting a continuous recruitment for current and future openings for Community Service Officers (CSO). These positions may be assigned to any campus within the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), including the College of Southern Nevada, Desert Research Institute, Nevada State College, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Under the direction of the Community Service Supervisor, this role performs a variety of security-related tasks for various NSHE campuses under UPD, Southern Command. UPD, Southern Command, is a full-service category I law enforcement agency serving over 80,000 students, faculty, and staff across an 800-square-mile area. The department includes sworn peace officers, a 9-1-1 Center, K-9 operations, emergency management operations, and oversight of major special events. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education.
  • Two years of experience in public contact work which included applying and implementing rules, regulations, or established policies.
  • Ability to work alone, without direct supervision.
  • Ability to stand unassisted for long periods of time.
  • A valid driver's license is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Certification in CPR at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment (for some positions).
  • First aid certification at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment (for some positions).
  • Must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
  • A criminal background check will be conducted on the candidate(s) selected for hire.

Responsibilities

  • Providing security for State buildings and grounds.
  • Providing protective services to buildings and occupants.
  • Enforcing applicable laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Maintaining security of assigned buildings or facilities and surrounding property by conducting visual surveillance through camera monitors or direct observation.
  • Monitoring State/NSHE property, displays, and individuals entering and leaving buildings and taking appropriate action according to department policy.
  • Patrolling buildings and grounds, checking windows, locks, doors, and security systems for damage or possible breach of security.
  • Following established procedures and guidelines when security or safety violations occur.
  • Maintaining constant radio communication and monitoring radio traffic for pertinent information, responding to all calls addressed to them.
  • Assisting in giving medical attention to those that require it (Certified in CPR, defibrillator, and first aid).
  • Notifying UPD of all emergency situations including fire alarms, fights, disturbances, medical emergencies, etc.
  • Relaying knowledge of emergency situations to responding police units.
  • Providing walking safety escorts as directed or requested.
  • Assisting with unlocks for students or employees locked out of a space for which they are authorized access.
  • Collecting Found Property and properly securing or releasing it.
  • Providing assistance to other Campus Departments (e.g., Special Events, Vendor access to Facilities).
  • Completing walking foot patrols of Buildings and Grounds, checking for safety and security concerns.
  • Submitting work orders for issues observed that need repair (e.g., Lights that are out, damaged property).
  • Assisting with checks of emergency call boxes.
  • Assisting with "jump starts" for disabled vehicles.
  • Responding to other non-confrontational calls for service as directed.
  • Engaging with community members and participating in community outreach events.
  • Observing, reporting, and checking on the welfare of individuals.
  • Completing Information Reports for property intake or for incidents as requested.
  • Immediately reporting any injury sustained while on duty.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by a Supervisor or Superior Officers.
