About The Position

The University Police Department (UPD), Southern Command, is conducting a continuous recruitment for current and future openings for Community Service Officers (CSO). These positions may be assigned to any campus within the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Southern Command, including the College of Southern Nevada, Desert Research Institute, Nevada State College, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Under the direction of the Community Service Supervisor, this position performs a variety of security-related tasks for various NSHE campuses under UPD, Southern Command. UPD, Southern Command, is a full-service category I law enforcement agency serving approximately 80,000 students, faculty, and staff over an 800-square-mile service area. The department includes sworn peace officers, a 9-1-1 Center, K-9 operations, emergency management operations, and oversight of major special events. The successful candidate will demonstrate support for diversity, equity, and inclusiveness and contribute to a respectful, positive work environment.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education.
  • Two years of experience in public contact work which included applying and implementing rules, regulations, or established policies.
  • Ability to work alone, without direct supervision.
  • Ability to stand unassisted for long periods of time.
  • Certified in CPR, defibrillator, and first aid (or obtain certification at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment).
  • A valid driver's license is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
  • A criminal background check will be conducted on the candidate(s) selected for hire.
  • Ability to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Provide security for State buildings and grounds.
  • Provide protective services to buildings and occupants.
  • Enforce applicable laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Maintain security of assigned buildings or facilities and surrounding property by conducting visual surveillance through camera monitors or direct observation.
  • Monitor State/NSHE property, displays, and individuals entering and leaving buildings, taking appropriate action according to department policy.
  • Patrol buildings and grounds, checking windows, locks, doors, and security systems for damage or possible breach of security.
  • Follow established procedures and guidelines when security or safety violations occur.
  • Maintain constant radio communication and continuously monitor radio traffic for pertinent information, responding to all calls addressed to them.
  • Notify UPD of all emergency situations including fire alarms, fights, disturbances, and medical emergencies.
  • Relay knowledge of emergency situations to responding police units.
  • Provide walking safety escorts as directed or requested.
  • Assist with unlocks for students or employees locked out of spaces for which they are authorized access.
  • Collect Found Property and properly secure or release it.
  • Provide assistance to other Campus Departments (e.g., Special Events, Vendor access to Facilities).
  • Complete walking foot patrols of Buildings and Grounds, checking for safety and security concerns.
  • Submit work orders for observed issues needing repair (e.g., lights out, damaged property).
  • Assist with checks of emergency call boxes.
  • Assist with "jump starts" for disabled vehicles.
  • Respond to other non-confrontational calls for service as directed.
  • Engage with community members and participate in community outreach events.
  • Observe, report, and check on the welfare of individuals.
  • Complete Information Reports for property intake or incidents as requested.
  • Immediately report any injury sustained while on duty.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by a Supervisor or Superior Officers.
