About The Position

This role involves gaining experience in various aspects of community pharmacy operations while training towards Pharmacy Technician licensure. Responsibilities include complying with dispensing laws and regulations, utilizing pharmacy computer systems for patient profiles and databases, assisting pharmacists with prescription dispensing, obtaining customer and insurance information, counting and labeling products, screening phone calls, prioritizing workload, verifying prescriptions at point of sale, operating pharmacy equipment, processing sales transactions, managing inventory using handheld devices, participating in inventories, processing returns, maintaining awareness of security and loss prevention, staying current with pharmacy trends, delivering medications, receiving and stocking deliveries, maintaining the front store over-the-counter section, and providing excellent customer service. For State Certified Technicians, additional duties include maintaining knowledge of drug names and dosages, communicating with insurance carriers, processing vendor orders and returns, reordering stock, processing invoices, and following accounting procedures. For Nationally Certified Technicians, requirements include one year of recent experience or PTCB certification, and strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Minimum of High School Diploma/GED or higher.
  • Currently licensed as a Pharmacy Tech in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Duties require very good verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • One-year recent experience (within the past 3 years) as a Pharmacy Technician; 3 years preferred, OR PTCB certification or equivalent certification as a Community Pharmacy Technician (Nationally Certified).

Nice To Haves

  • Certification with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) (Preferred for State Licensed)
  • Current certification with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or equivalent certification (Nationally Certified)

Responsibilities

  • Comply with the general laws and regulations governing the dispensing of prescriptions.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the Pharmacy computer system, inputting information to create and update patient profiles, and maintaining the POS product database.
  • Resolve routine problems relating to the Pharmacy computer system and generate, maintain, and file required reports.
  • Assist the Pharmacist in dispensing prescriptions according to departmental policies, processing both new and refill prescriptions.
  • Obtain all required customer and/or insurance information and enter into pharmacy software.
  • Count and label products as assigned.
  • Cannot take prescriptions over the phone.
  • Screen telephone calls and answer inquiries within scope of practice.
  • Prioritize workload to ensure timely customer service.
  • Verify, at point of sale, that customers receive correct prescription(s).
  • Maintain working knowledge of all Pharmacy equipment.
  • Accurately process all sales, including check and credit card transactions, and reconcile the cash register at the end of the shift.
  • Operate a handheld inventory device and participate in periodic inventories.
  • Process and track returns to reverse distributor.
  • Maintain awareness of security processes, loss prevention techniques, causes and prevention of shrinkage, and recognize suspicious behavior, reporting all questionable practices to management.
  • Stay current with Pharmacy trends.
  • Deliver medications to patients.
  • Receive and put away pharmacy deliveries.
  • Keep the front of the store over-the-counter section neat and stocked.
  • Consistently provide service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Maintain knowledge base of brand and generic drug names as well as dosage forms (State Certified).
  • Communicate with insurance carriers to resolve rejected claims (State Certified).
  • Process vendor and distribution center orders and returns (State Certified).
  • Reorder required stock from wholesaler, vendors, or storeroom to maintain stock levels, applying appropriate budget codes, processing returns, and following up on backorders (State Certified).
  • Rotate and maintain stock (State Certified).
  • Process all invoices and purchase orders in accordance with established accounting procedures (State Certified).
