About The Position

The Health Behavior and Society Department is seeking a Community Outreach Worker to support the conduct of a research project. This role involves collecting and organizing data through various procedures, including community outreach, sample collection, laboratory work, and fieldwork. The position also provides general administrative support for meetings, events, communications, and reporting. The Community Outreach Worker will support outreach and engagement activities for a mobile overdose- and HIV-prevention intervention, offering services such as drug checking, PrEP, wound care, and safer drug use supplies to individuals who use drugs in Baltimore and neighboring counties. Responsibilities include assisting with participant engagement, maintaining relationships with partner organizations, collecting and documenting data, assisting with HIV testing and counseling, facilitating referrals to healthcare and social services, distributing harm reduction supplies, and educating clients on naloxone use. Additional research, outreach, administrative, and project-related duties may be required as the project evolves.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • One year of related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • Prior experience doing community outreach in syringe services or other harm reduction programs.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive large vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Support community outreach activities for a mobile overdose- and HIV-prevention intervention.
  • Engage with study participants, community members, and partner organizations.
  • Assist with maintaining relationships and referral networks.
  • Collect, document, and organize data related to service delivery and distribution of supplies.
  • Assist with HIV testing and counseling.
  • Facilitate healthcare and social service referrals.
  • Distribute safer drug use supplies and naloxone.
  • Provide education to clients and community members on naloxone use.
  • Assist in developing operational plans to meet research goals.
  • Set up tools and procedures for data collection and study processes.
  • Collect and organize data per study requirements, e.g., participant interviews, administering questionnaires; conduct background research, laboratory processing, etc.
  • Process data by organizing data records and study files.
  • Run basic analyses and prepare routine reports.
  • Perform literature searches, abstract data from literature searches, and index gathered data.
  • Prepare for, engage in, and document client interactions and service/supply provision.
  • Organize and track supply inventory.
  • Develop referral networks and maintain relationships with service providers and pharmacies in intervention areas.
  • Make referrals to medical, social, treatment, and other support services, including warm hand-offs as appropriate.
  • Engage in harm reduction-based street outreach, promoting the program’s services, distributing promotional items, and providing harm reduction education.
  • Build rapport with community members, including people who use drugs, through outreach and attendance at community association meetings.
  • Take independent initiative to complete tasks and make independent decisions about the direction and conduct of the work.
