About The Position

This position is responsible for all social media, community outreach and public relations, as well as planning, coordination and implementation of onsite and offsite adoption events and promotions in promoting the shelter while also facilitating the adoption of animals. The Community Outreach Specialist uses marketing to highlight and market the events, programs, animals, and services of the Animal Control Department. They create and manage all social media content, social media campaigns, and engagement while adhering to department standards. This role explores and implements new campaigns, tools and digital media channels to increase department exposure and drive traffic to social media sites, website, and shelter. The specialist represents Animal Control at various community and special events, conducts community outreach to educate the public through school events, classroom learning and special events on responsible pet ownership and animal characteristics. They research programs other shelters are implementing, play a key role in promotion of Animal Control initiatives, programs, and events to the community through print and online media in concert with the Communications department, and create and edit videos, podcasts and other digital media offerings as needed for virtual outreach. The role analyzes social media content to determine what engages the public, assists with prompt response to social media postings, and writes press releases as needed. They create content that will drive traffic from social media to the Park and Recreation web site, consistently increases followers and generates engagement. Demonstrates proficiency in an array of creative tools to create video, image and text-based content. Identifies key audiences and develops marketing plans to engage the public. Identifies opportunities to share the stories of Animal Control successes and highlights. Uses social media, design and video to promote Animal Control activities and services. Works closely with Animal Control leadership to shape the message of department communications for select projects as assigned. Coordinates the Animal Control community outreach events, attends committee and leadership meetings as assigned, and exercises vision and creativity in approaches to planning, coordination, and problem solving. Assists with special projects as directed.

Requirements

  • Two (2) to Three (3) years of experience in marketing, graphic design or communications field.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have dependable transportation.
  • A pre-employment criminal background check is required.
  • Knowledge of Marketing and public relations experience
  • Knowledge of Community dynamics as it relates to animal welfare and education of pet owners in impacted areas of Montgomery County.
  • Knowledge of Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of Current office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Computer software consistent for this position.
  • Skill in Analyzing complex administrative information and issues, defining problems and evaluating alternatives, and recommending methods, procedures, and techniques for resolution of issues.
  • Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  • Skill in Applying judgment and discretion in resolving problems and interpreting policies and regulations.
  • Ability to Perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits requiring minimal direction and supervision.
  • Ability to Establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.

  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Use and normal maintenance of office machines, (copier, computer, printer, etc.).
  • Frequent use of phone handset and repetitive use of hand & fingers to operate office equipment, use computer keyboard & computer mouse and to perform other office tasks.
  • Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university in Marketing, Graphic Design, Communications or equivalent experience preferred.
