About The Position

The Community Organizer works within the Community Engagement Program and reports to the Program Manager. This position promotes community awareness of domestic and sexual violence and advances survivor-led efforts to prevent gender-based violence through outreach, education, leadership development, and strategic partnerships. The Community Organizer coordinates VIP’s Promotoras (survivor leaders) program, providing political education and leadership opportunities that strengthen community engagement and advocacy. Working collaboratively across programs, the Community Organizer also connects community members to resources, supports educational campaigns and messaging, and builds partnerships with community organizations, institutions, and elected officials to expand VIP’s impact and reach.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in community organizing, leadership development, and/or group facilitation.
  • Spoken and written fluency in Spanish and English
  • Experience working with diverse communities, particularly with Latinx community.
  • Knowledge of issues impacting immigrant communities and familiarity with the gender-based violence movement, including domestic and sexual violence systems.
  • Must have excellent public speaking, relationship building, facilitation and community engagement skills.
  • Strong organizational, project management, prioritization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to survivor leadership and peer-to-peer approaches to community and cultural change.
  • Commitment to cultural humility, continuous learning, and trauma informed practice.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, survivors, community partners, and public stakeholders while also working independently.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends;
  • Ability to travel throughout NYC using public transportation and lift up to 30lbs. of outreach materials.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, databases, virtual platforms, and other standard office technology.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and expand VIP’s Promotora Leadership Program.
  • Design and facilitate leadership development, political education, and advocacy trainings for Promotoras.
  • Coordinate Promotoras’ participation in outreach, community events and advocacy activities.
  • Convene regular meetings, distribute outreach, and provide program updates and materials.
  • Collaborate with VIP programs to identify and engage survivors interested in leadership opportunities.
  • Develop and implement strategic outreach to increase community awareness of domestic and sexual violence and access to VIP services.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, elected officials, schools, consulates, community boards, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent VIP at community events, meetings, health fairs, rallies, and other public forums.
  • Deliver presentations and workshops in English and Spanish to community members, service providers, and partner organizations.
  • Collaborate across VIP programs to develop and implement community education, outreach, and awareness initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate outreach, partnerships, and community engagement activities in organizational databases and reporting systems.
  • Participate in supervision, staff meetings, program meetings, organizational events, and special projects.
  • Support fundraising efforts and other duties as assigned.
