Community Manager

About The Position

MATTER is on a mission to accelerate the pace of change of healthcare. We are a community of entrepreneurs, health systems, life sciences companies and innovators working together to build what's next in healthcare. We're a not-for-profit, but we operate with the urgency (and curiosity) of a startup. Our space in The MART is where a lot of that work comes to life. About this Role We're looking for someone who can make the place hum — and then dream up what happens inside it. You'll keep our 15,000-square-foot space operating smoothly, lead the front desk function, and get to know the people who walk through our doors. You're part host, part operator, part fixer, part instigator, part "how did you even figure that out?" person. If something's broken, confusing, missing or clunky — you don't wait. You poke at it, test it, Google it, ask around and figure it out. And when you spot an opportunity to bring people together in the space, you don't wait on that either. But more than that: We want someone who looks at a room full of healthcare entrepreneurs and thinks, what could we do with this? — and then makes it happen.

Requirements

  • You're the person in your group who's always organizing the thing — you like bringing people together and dreaming up reasons to do it
  • You have a knack for ideas and you follow through on them
  • You know the healthcare innovation world well enough to spot what would resonate with the people in it
  • You can work across a team to turn an idea into something real
  • You like people, and you're good at making them feel welcome
  • You've run an office, a space, a community or something close to it
  • You're comfortable with technology (and not intimidated by things you don't already know)
  • When something doesn't work, your first instinct is to try to fix it yourself
  • You notice details other people miss
  • You're very reliable
  • You have 1–3+ years of relevant work experience
  • You're in Chicago and want to be in the space (this is not a remote job)

Responsibilities

  • Bring the Community to Life: Design community-based programming that healthcare entrepreneurs and innovators want to show up for — think meetups for physician-entrepreneurs, founder gatherings, peer circles, topical salons
  • Turn the energy of the people at MATTER into connections, momentum and reasons to keep coming back
  • Partner with our marketing, ventures and partnerships teams to take an idea from "what if we…" to a full room
  • Shape the whole experience of being at MATTER — not just the hello at the door and the goodbye on the way out
  • Keep the Space Running: Own the day-to-day operations of our 15,000-sq-ft space
  • Be a visible, approachable presence in the space
  • Help members, partners and guests get what they need
  • Keep the space organized, welcoming and ready for whatever the day throws at it
  • Manage and support our receptionist so every interaction is warm, sharp and on point
  • Be the Go-To for "Why Isn't This Working?": Own conference room tech, AV, printers, WiFi, keycards
  • Troubleshoot issues in real time; experiment; know when to escalate to IT
  • Notice patterns: what keeps breaking, what confuses people, what slows things down
  • Fix what you can; improve what you should; document what matters
  • Support the CEO: Help with scheduling, coordination and the occasional "can you just take care of this?"

Benefits

  • Choice of numerous medical, dental and vision insurance plan options
  • Opportunity to participate in a 403(b) retirement plan and contribute to FSA plans for tax-free support of medical, child care and transit expenses
  • Monthly cell phone stipend that is not taxed
  • Unlimited paid time off, because we believe that time devoted to yourself and those in your life is fundamental to good health
  • Annual company-wide winter break between Christmas and New Year's
  • Expanding your professional network across the healthcare and entrepreneurial ecosystems
  • Engaging with some of the most innovative thinkers in healthcare
  • Growing skills and knowledge with continuous learning, including dedicated company-wide time to learning each month and periodic workshops for our team
  • Working with a diverse team that is passionate about our work and cares about one other
  • Owning your work, with unbounded opportunities to stretch, learn and lead
