About The Position

Rise Women’s Legal Centre (Rise) is a community legal centre providing accessible legal services that are responsive to the unique needs of self-identifying women and gender diverse persons, primarily in the area of family law in British Columbia. In addition to serving clients, we are a knowledge based and knowledge generating organization, and work collaboratively with organizations around the province. Rise’s work is guided by three focus areas – learning, helping, and systems change, through which the organization provides direct support to clients, learning opportunities for students, family law advocates, support workers, and lawyers, and works on systemic change through research and education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD)
  • Licensed to practice law in British Columbia
  • Minimum 3 continuous years of family law practice, including litigation practice and representation of clients in both the BC Provincial and Supreme Courts.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees delivery of legal services by the Community Legal Clinic to ensure services meet the needs of vulnerable clients while also meeting Law Society standards for legal practice and professional conduct
  • Provides support, mentoring, and legal supervision of CLC Legal Navigator, Family Law Advocate(s), Family Law Services Coordinator, Community Engagement Worker, and CLC Program Assistant.
  • Reviews CLC client-facing staff’s legal work, including client communications, pleadings, and other legal documents.
  • Occasionally participates in community outreach and meetings to increase visibility and accessibility of the CLC, identify community needs, and to identify best practices and improve client services.
  • Represents family law clients with level of service and priorities for case work to be decided in consultation with the Director of Legal & Advocacy Services.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Legal & Advocacy Services and the Virtual Legal Clinic Managing Lawyer, provides legal mentorship to junior lawyers and articling student as needed.
  • Provides accurate time-keeping records, statistical information and activity reports, and carries out such further administrative responsibilities as may be required by Rise’s Director of Legal & Advocacy Services or Executive Director.
  • Occasionally delivers workshops and presentations to advocates, lawyers, and other community groups.
  • Occasionally participates in committees and consultations across the province to provide Rise’s perspective.
  • Identifies systemic issues arising from casework and helps to strategize how to address these issues.
  • Provides strategic input into organisational planning and processes.
  • Participates in Rise evaluation processes as required.
  • Any other duties as agreed from time to time.
