About The Position

The Community Kitchen Co-Ordinator will oversee the day-to-day operations of a new commercial kitchen facility designed to support food security programs, small food businesses, and community initiatives. This role involves managing kitchen logistics, scheduling and supporting diverse user groups, ensuring food safety and compliance, maintaining equipment, and fostering collaboration with community partners. The Co-Ordinator will work closely with The Salvation Army team and the community kitchen collaborative to ensure equitable access and the kitchen’s long-term sustainability.

Requirements

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary program of one academic year
  • Food Safe Level 1
  • Food Safe Level 2
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certification
  • WHMIS Training & Universal Precautions Training
  • Two years of prior related experience, including one year of experience in areas of supervision and budgeting.
  • Knowledge about food preparation and kitchen equipment.
  • Experience in commercial kitchen management, culinary arts, or food service operations
  • Strong understanding of food safety standards and regulatory compliance (e.g. FoodSafe level 1 or 2)
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple users and priorities in a shared-use facility.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and basic budget tracking tools.
  • The performance of the job requires attentive listening (kitchen users/volunteers/co-workers, empathy to guests) and the ability to give directions. It also requires frequent attention to the preparation of food, reading recipes, adhering to safety procedures and regulations and keeping track of what supplies are needed before running out.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Valid Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of up to two (2) years of Community College will be considered as an asset.
  • Other training as required by contract or The Salvation Army
  • An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.
  • Experience working with non-profits, community organizations, or small businesses preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily kitchen operations, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and efficiency.
  • Maintain equipment and manage inventory of kitchen supplies and food.
  • Schedule kitchen usage among partner organizations, businesses, and community groups.
  • Support small cooking operations-programs.
  • Further develop and implement policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for kitchen users and external partners.
  • Work collaboratively with the Community Kitchen steering committee to guide strategic planning and equitable access.
  • Onboard and support non-profit and business users, including training on kitchen operations and regulations.
  • Monitor kitchen budget, track usage, and support cost recovery through rental fees.
  • Maintain accurate records and assist in grant reporting and program evaluation.
  • Support the integration of the kitchen into food recovery, meal production, and educational programs.
  • Promote the kitchen as a hub for food literacy, job training, and small business development.
  • Proper stewardship in minimizing food and material costs.
  • Accountable for the Maintenance and safe usage of equipment.
  • Accountable for the proper care of supplies/food received.
  • Little input in preparing budgets with respect to the departmental budget.
