About The Position

The City and County of Denver's Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) is seeking two Public Health AmeriCorps / Community Health Worker Apprentice candidates interested in exploring a career in public and/or environmental health. Through supportive on-the-job learning and related classroom instruction (in-person and virtual), successful candidates will gain the skills and knowledge needed to advance into a public health career. Certain requirements must be completed within a 1-year on-the-job training period. This is a limited position with an end date of one year from the date of hire. The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model, with employees expected to work on-site at their designated job location at least three days per week, and off-site work permitted as needed within the state of Colorado. Positions within the Office of the Medical Examiner and the Department of Animal Protection do not qualify for remote or hybrid work arrangements and are expected to work in person on a full-time basis. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • Must enroll in a recognized apprentice program.
  • At least 18 years of age or older.
  • One (1) year of peer support or related job experience or volunteer work may be substituted for the high school education.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail, organization, and multitasking.
  • A willingness to learn new things.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Strong interest in learning more about public health and serving the Denver community.
  • Work or volunteer experience serving your community or being a community advocate.
  • A strong interest in learning more about public and environmental health and serving the Denver community as an early career professional.
  • For the Denver Animal Protection position: The ability to work in an environment with various species of animals and interact with them on a regular basis, following appropriate training.
  • Within 5 days of being hired, register with local Workforce Center at Connecting Colorado or update registration if currently registered and email DDPHE verifying completion.
  • Within 45 days after being hired, complete Apprenticeship Agreement and submit to Apprenticeship Sponsor.
  • Valid work authorization that does not require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct community outreach to individuals, communities, service providers, and groups.
  • Assist individuals and communities in navigating health and social service systems.
  • Implement individual and community assessments.
  • Provide culturally and linguistically appropriate health education and information.
  • Provide coaching and social support.
  • Build professional relationships and networks with service providers across systems to understand client services and resources.
  • Keep routine records, write reports, and complete forms.
  • Comply with standard safety rules and procedures.
  • Learn industry standards, regulatory standards, operational processes, and other guiding professional practices.
  • Actively participate on an emergency preparedness and response team to support DDPHE’s responsibilities outlined in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan, which may require being ‘on-call’ from time to time to help respond to emergencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • For Denver Animal Protection position: Schedule Shelter veterinary clinic clients, arrange transport to/from services, manage pet supply inventory and distribution, offer humane education to local K-12 schools and community-based organizations, and attend community events.
  • For Emergency Management & Medical Operations position: Support emergency preparedness education and outreach efforts, assist with the review and development of emergency management plans, participate in preparedness exercises and trainings, help coordinate communications and resources across city departments and community partners, and assist with emergency response activities as needed. Support community health education, training and program development, sexual health, immunization, health prevention, and field work to support street medicine.
