About The Position

This is a specialized public health school nursing position in the School Health Program. This position requires independent problem solving, nursing knowledge and clinical judgment skills. Incumbent in this position must be able to follows the Standards of School Nursing Practice (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes, planning, implementation and evaluation) in the provision of quality care to students in the school setting. This person must also have sound knowledge of state law, school district and school health policies and procedures and community resources pertaining to school health services. Incumbent works with a diverse population. Incumbent may be assigned to complete duties and services in comprehensive schools as mandated by Florida Statutes.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing as evidenced by the completion of a Associates of Science and Nursing
  • Knowledge and proficiency with computers and various computer programs and software.
  • Knowledge and experience of the nursing profession.
  • Ability to perform extended public health functions such as pediatrics in clinical and non-clinical settings.
  • All Florida Department of Health positions require the incumbent to be able to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English. Applicants who do not meet this requirement will not be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts nursing assessments and assess students’ health appraisals. Documents and maintain a confidential Individual Health Record on each student in accordance with local, state and federal laws. Documents’ information in the students’ Cumulative Health Records following the established guidelines. Assess students’ health records for evidence of having a health examination and Certification of Immunizations or Certificate of Immunization Exception on file. Monitors immunization status of students for compliance with Florida Immunization Statutes. Reviews students’ emergency contact information to ensure allergies, chronic conditions, disease/disorders and medical and/or medication treatments have been documented. Provides clinical guidance and oversight of clinical practice of Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP). Travel to school sites and other work-related activities.
  • Develops Chronic Condition/Medication list. Consults with parent/guardian regarding student health concerns. Follows-up on identified students with chronic conditions/disorders and provides/assists with medical management as needed. Provides health information regarding placement of students in exceptional student program and re-evaluation as needed. Develops Individualized Healthcare Plans/School Emergency Action Plans. Implements the operation plan for the management of emergency health needs in the school setting.
  • Provides and coordinates health educational activities that promote healthy living. Refers and follows-up on the identification of actual or potential health problems. Keeps a current tracking system on the number of parents/guardians who refuse for their child to receive health services and or interventions. Conducts health education classes: dental and general health, injury prevention and safety, nutrition and physical activity, human sexuality, mental health and self-esteem, substance abuse, suicide prevention and other approved classes that address high risk behaviors, and staff wellness. Arranges for authorized speakers to present during health education classes. Conducts staff wellness activities and assists school personnel with health education curricula development.
  • Meets mandates and other requirements, provide additional health service duties in selected schools which includes: Growth and Development/BMI (height/weight) screenings on students in mandated grades: (1, 3, 6 and optional 9). Conduct and promote activities that focus on reducing rates of obesity. Assist as needed with the hearing and scoliosis screening process within assigned schools. Refer and provide follow-up on students with abnormal results in each of the following areas: vision screening, BMI/Development, hearing and scoliosis results. Assess if school district staff are compliant with the Florida Statute as it relates to CPR and First Aid. Provides technical assistance and support to charter schools as necessary.
  • Assist students or school appointed UAP’s in the administration of medication during school hours. Provide training opportunities to support staff and school personnel in the administration of medications to students within the assigned schools. Develop and conduct child specific trainings as mandated by Florida Statutes level 1, 2 and 3. Assists with new staff orientation and preceptorship of nursing students. Assists other programs with clinical support and other agency related activities. Assist with investigating and responding to public health and communicable disease emergencies. Participates in cross-training activities/assignments.
  • Incumbent is responsible for the collection and reporting of data required by Florida Statutes for the school health program. Data to be collected includes: student record review, immunization compliance, students receiving medications, students with chronic conditions, abnormal screening results, list of students visiting school clinics, educational classes provided by school and topic of discussion, and students requiring “Epi-Pens”. Data is to be collected and maintain in a confidential manner. Incumbent is responsible to submit data in a timely manner with accuracy. Nurse is to use the Health Management System (HMS) and document information on a weekly basis.
  • Provides and/or coordinates pregnancy prevention/human sexuality education in selected schools to grade appropriate students after receiving parent/guardian consent. Collaborates with school principals and community partners to assist in providing Dental Disease Prevention Programs in the school setting. Identifies pregnant teens and teens who return to school for continuing education after delivery. Identifies teens for comprehensive intervention services including Healthy Start and Healthy Families. Identifies the number of low birth weight babies born to students. Reports actual or suspected cases of child abuse, abandonment or neglect. Participates yearly in at least two community health fairs during the evaluation period.
