About The Position

North Star Fund is seeking passionate and knowledgeable community organizers and activists from New York City or the Hudson Valley to join its Community Funding Committees (CFCs). These committees are the core decision-making bodies responsible for shaping the organization's grantmaking strategy and allocating funds to grassroots organizing efforts led by communities of color. The role involves influencing the organization's strategy, learning about philanthropy, and participating in a community of leaders dedicated to systemic change and trust-based philanthropy. CFC members will review applications, participate in deliberation meetings, and contribute to strategic convenings. The position is a volunteer role with a stipend and reimbursement for expenses, requiring a two-year commitment.

Requirements

  • Experience as an organizer or as a member-leader in a grassroots, member-led organization.
  • Understanding of social justice issues and community organizing in New York City or the Hudson Valley.
  • Interest in learning, adopting and disseminating the principles of trust-based philanthropy and making grantmaking more responsive to the needs of communities.
  • Can commit to at least two years of participation.
  • Willingness to travel in your region (when it is safe to do so).
  • Discretion and flexibility over personal/work schedule, or permission/support from supervisor to participate.

Responsibilities

  • Collectively decide how to allocate grants.
  • Influence the strategy of the organization.
  • Learn about philanthropy and grantmaking.
  • Support communities of color building power in New York City and the Hudson Valley.
  • Participate in a philanthropic leadership community.
  • Reshape how traditional philanthropy is practiced and experienced.
  • Participate in democratizing and applying trust-based philanthropy principles to grant making.
  • Gain deeper insight into the organizing ecosystem in New York.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with fellow organizers.
  • Read and score applications.
  • Take part in grant deliberation meetings.
  • Attend occasional virtual gathering and training opportunities.
  • Participate in an annual, two-day strategic convening.
  • Communicate in a timely and responsive way with program staff.
  • Commit to upholding North Star Fund’s community organizing criteria.
  • Commit to a fair process, respecting applicants’ confidential information and naming conflicts of interest.
  • Commit to participate for a two-year term.
