About The Position

The Community Editor is the key staff member responsible for the day-to-day operations of the newspaper, including reporting, editing, story selection, copy editing, proofing, and design and pagination. This role also extends to special or niche publications. The Community Editor assists in content selection and determines the placement of stories and graphics for news and features sections, overseeing their overall design. This position requires strong news judgment, particularly in selecting and placing local stories, in collaboration with the managing editor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor or other 4-year degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent
  • Strong planning orientation
  • Professional proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English
  • Valid driver's license and proof of insurance
  • Basic literacy in computer software, including word processing and Internet browsing/research
  • Thorough familiarity with AP Style and local modifications
  • Familiarity with InDesign and Blox
  • Knowledge of current design trends and advancements

  • Previous experience as a reporter
  • Demonstrated growth and progressive responsibilities as a reporter

Responsibilities

  • Handling day-to-day reporting, editing and story selection
  • Copy editing, proofing, design and pagination of the newspaper, including special or niche publications
  • Choosing content and determining story and graphics placements for the news and features sections
  • Overseeing the overall design of the newspaper
  • Demonstrating extraordinary news judgment in choosing stories and advising in the placement of local stories
  • Interacting successfully with others in a business setting, especially working effectively with reporters and other editors
  • Working collaboratively in a team environment to meet customer needs, including effective interdepartmental relationships with the Advertising, Circulation, Business and Production departments
  • Working successfully with others in a busy, deadline-driven environment
  • Maintaining regular attendance
  • Copy editing stories and proofing pages for accuracy, fairness, completeness, grammar, style, syntax, organization and clarity on deadline
  • Writing clear and effective headlines, decks, subheads, call-out quotations and cutlines
  • Designing for clarity and maximum visual impact on deadline
  • Meeting and enforcing multiple deadlines
  • Making quick, confident, informed decisions, acting promptly and following through effectively
  • Being familiar with current libel, copyright, public access and open meeting regulations
  • Having familiarity with the community, its history, its issues and leading personalities
  • Managing time effectively
  • Maintaining a calm, objective and professional demeanor in adverse or emergency situations
  • Cordially handling inquiries or observations from the public, including angry responses
  • Treating all other newsroom workers with dignity and respect while defining and enforcing expectations
