About The Position

The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) protects and enhances the daily economic lives of New Yorkers to create thriving communities. DCWP licenses nearly 45,000 businesses in more than 40 industries and enforces key consumer protection and workplace laws that apply to countless more. By supporting businesses through equitable enforcement and access to resources, DCWP protects the marketplace from predatory practices and strives to create a culture of compliance. DCWP empowers consumers and working families by providing the tools and resources they need to achieve financial health and work-life balance. DCWP also conducts research and advocates for public policy that furthers its work to support New York City’s communities. External Affairs (EA) manages DCWP’s relationships with respect to press, digital media, public-facing media, City Hall, elected officials, government agencies, and community & faith-based organizations. EA is responsible for these relationships to ensure that the agency speaks with a singular and consistent voice in advancing our mission across DCWP’s wide jurisdiction. Specific efforts include: promoting DCWP in the press; engaging the public through digital communications; producing DCWP’s public-facing media, including integrated public awareness campaigns; coordinating legislative policy; conducting community outreach; and responding to constituent inquiries or complaint. EA is seeking a results-driven, self-starting individual to serve as a Community Affairs Associate. Under the supervision of the Director of Community Affairs, the individual will be responsible for work activities including, but not limited, to:

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to '1' or '2' above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in '1' above.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and maintaining external relationships with elected officials, government agencies, industry and community stakeholders, and members of the public
  • Conducting frequent in-person and virtual outreach to underserved communities
  • Accurately and concisely representing the work and policies of the agency in an engaging manner
  • Coordinating event logistics, locations, materials, staffing, and trainings
  • Effectively linking with other departmental divisions to ensure project success
  • Providing administrative support and assistance in special or ad-hoc projects as needed
