About The Position

The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charitable organization dedicated to reducing crime and making Calgary communities safer by helping youth and adults make positive changes away from criminal behavior. They address the root causes of crime through housing, education, employment programs, and support. CJHS is committed to restorative justice and values diversity and inclusion. The Government of Alberta’s Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program funds services that work in conjunction with CJHS to support clients in coordinating and accessing services for independent community living. PDD services offer Home Living Support, Respite, Employment Support, and Community Access. This program focuses on services that promote an individual’s inclusion in community activities and personal development through arts, education, recreation, community association programs, and volunteer participation. The Community Access Outreach Worker (CAOW) will provide one-on-one services to a client for 20 hours a week, assisting with their successful reintegration into the community. The client may be incarcerated and awaiting release or living in the community. The CAOW will collaborate with the client to create a strength-based plan including pre-release planning, community volunteering, and other reintegration activities. The CAOW will be part of the client’s Case Work Team, working collaboratively to implement their case work plan, identify risk and protective factors, and ensure access to and success in activities. The CAOW is responsible for attending all activities with the client, all documentation, using individual discretion in decision-making, implementing trauma-informed care and natural supports, and managing risk with high-needs/high-risk clients. Reporting client progress to the Case Work Team is also a responsibility.
