The New Freedom Communications Supervisor oversees the Communications Specialist/Mentorship team, which mentors incarcerated individuals to support positive life choices and successful community re-entry. Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, time ‑ management, and critical ‑ thinking skills
  • Strong problem ‑ solving ability, with sound judgment in sensitive, high ‑ accountability environments
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in both team ‑ based and independent settings, taking initiative when appropriate
  • Proven ability to remain flexible, adaptable, and solution ‑ oriented in a fast ‑ paced environment with frequently changing priorities
  • Thorough understanding of recovery ‑ focused practices, including 12 ‑ step program principles, trauma ‑ informed approaches, or similar recovery frameworks
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, comply with institutional and organizational policies, and uphold ethical standards
  • Demonstrated reliability, accountability, and professionalism when working with justice ‑ involved populations
  • Intermediate computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams), internet ‑ based systems, and electronic record ‑ keeping platforms (e.g., CRM and/or Electronic Health Records)
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with incarcerated individuals and/or within D.O.C. re ‑ entry programs
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Communications Specialist (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory or team ‑ lead experience, including oversight of performance, workload, or training
  • Must be 21 years or older
  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) communication skills
  • Experience coordinating with correctional staff, parole officers, or institutional administration
  • Experience using CRM databases, case ‑ management systems, or documentation platforms in a compliance ‑ driven environment
  • Prior experience supporting or supervising staff within nonprofit, social services, re ‑ entry, or recovery ‑ focused programs
  • Postsecondary coursework or certifications in social work, counseling, criminal justice, human services, or a related field

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the establishment and maintenance of relationships with mentees’ COIIIs and COIVs to coordinate individualized release plans and support New Freedom Project (NFP) mentorship efforts
  • Oversees the provision of mentor applications, acceptance letters, and housing information to COIIIs
  • Oversees the coordination of committee meetings for short-term mentees or non-mentees who have opportunities within New Freedom programs
  • Ensures the development and maintenance of strong relationships with lead mentors on each yard
  • Encourages and supports ambassador-type mentor roles that advance NFP’s mission of empowering the innate goodness in every human being
  • Ensures consistent and appropriate engagement between mentors, mentees, and institutional stakeholders
  • Ensures the Communications/Mentorship team provides timely and accurate information to the New Freedom Media team to address rumors, concerns, or emerging issues on the yards
  • Supports adherence to appropriate letter-writing standards and institutional communication requirements
  • Oversees and monitors the scanning, signing, and logging of consent for placement forms for future releases, primarily for parole officers
  • Oversees and ensures the accurate logging of mentor interactions and required encounters within the CRM platform
  • Supervises and supports the Communications Specialist/Mentorship team to ensure caseload management and performance standards are met
  • Supports and participates in the training of all new Communications Specialists
  • Partners with Human Resources and senior leadership to address staff performance concerns in a timely, effective, and professional manner
  • Demonstrates integrity, professionalism, and accountability in all interactions with staff, mentors, institutional partners, and mentees
  • Takes ownership of team performance, program outcomes, and compliance with organizational policies and institutional guidelines
  • Ensures confidentiality, ethical standards, and accurate documentation are consistently upheld
  • Models New Freedom values in leadership approach, decision-making, and communication
  • Proactively identifies challenges, escalates risks appropriately, and implements corrective actions when needed
  • Maintains responsibility for meeting deadlines, managing priorities, and following through on commitments
  • Accepts feedback constructively and engages in continuous learning and improvement to enhance program effectiveness and leadership impact
